Issues and Contacts for the G8 2005

** Indymedia Feature Workpad - GoE2005IssuesWhyArePeopleProtesting - June 05

A list of issues Indymedia could provide analysis on before and during the 2005 G8 summit, and people/groups who could be approached to let them know we want their articles. This is part of a general project for GoE2005ReportingIssues. This page will provide some resources on lists of issues that Indymedia will provide analysis on and collate information and analysis from other groups.

Feel free to add/reorganise issues and add as many contacts as you can!

Follow up from Media Converge in London - May 14/15th of May.

Feedback from Media Convergence

There will be lots of information posted about protests and actions on Indymedia over the G8 period. Content is important because
1) there needs to be background information which explains WHY people are protesting. This is to raise awareness among the thousands who visit indymedia including mainstream journalists.
2) There needs to be diverse and balanced coverage

We agreed on the following issues as a starting point for discussion. Background information will appear on the Indymedia G8 page. For each of a number of topics we'll have a summary paragraph and links to other websites. It was felt that these represent the types of protest that will be occuring at the week of the G8 protests. Details about each of these issues will be collected in the individual twiki page that links off each of the issues. In was envisaged that one person would co-ordinate attempts to collate information. Where a person volunteered their names/e-mail are noted. Where there are no names - please just add to wiki or take the responsbility yourself by adding your name.

The video and audio groups at the convergence also expressed an interest in providing some content to provide as an introduction to the main issues as well as a call out to protest.

History Of Protest? - Why these tactics?

i.e. why have confrontational protests, direct action etc when the G8 leaders claim to be doing good things on the same issues we're interested in?

what are the diffrences AND LINKS! between make poverty history and dissent etc etc. how can 'insider' (sold out?) and 'outsider' (demonised?) networks work together, apart, good cop bad cop model etc.

Also an explanation of the different types of tactics from large demonstrations to direct actions and the situationalists and alternative types of protest. Not sure how these people label themselves but try to provide an explanation as to why the People Golfing Association and the rebel clown army exist and what they are trying to achieve.

History Of G8? and corporations

Document from Dissent What is the G8 (pdf)

Excellent History of the G8 - An Activist's Guide

*Comment from Planet Mail: Christophe Aguiton is quite good on NGO side but is VERY ATTAC angled and the activists guide is a bit odd - like saying reclaim the streets worked to defend the DOCTORS in Liverpool instead of the Dockers! (no doubt translation error) - and while it nods at J18 saying it's significant it says RTS followed ATTAC and doesnt mention that J18 was truly global with militant actions kicking off in many countries, also doesn't mention the Global RTS in 1998 alongside Birmingham G8 etc etc - which is i think a bit of a problem for a UK or radical audience - but there's a lot of good stuff in there.

History Of Alternative Media?

Will probably focus on the history of Indymedia given its fifth birthday but could potentially go further back in time to cover the pre-internet - you never know.

Diverse coverage

To ensure diverse coverage we need to work with the dispatch people to

*Create an up-to-date list of actions and events which need reporting, e.g. counter-conferences

*Put this list on the'how to get involved' (resource) section on the website

*Put this list in the IM centres

*Call out for reporting on actions which aren't being covered

*Ask people to make less heard voices heard and for variety in audio, e.g. interviewing members of audience in counter-conferences

Action called for from Convergence

ACTION Call out for topic co-ordinators for the remaining topics

ACTION Call out for links to be sent to topic co-ordinators, with a sentence describing what the link contains

ACTION Send the info to the G8 list to be posted on G8 page

Misc -

This was the starting point of these wiki before the convergence

Initial thoughts from e-mail from Video group is being set up to look at this as well -
