Provisional process for Summaries sent to the SummariesWg project

(Words with a defined meaning appear once in italics, there is a list of definitions at the end of this page. If the reasons for this process seem strange make sure you read our SumFaq )

  • Overview of steps

  • Steps in detail

Multilingual link text is added

The first step when the list, or one of us, receives a summary is to add the text below, this is available in all our target languages. This should be added at the top of the text (not in the 'summary' part of the online form on internal.indy).

(((i))) imc-summaries-wg (((i)))

  • (en) Please use the following hyperlink to read available translations
  • (sp) Utilice por favor el hyperlink siguiente para leer traducciones disponibles
  • (de) Verwenden Sie bitte den folgenden Hyperlink, um vorhandene Übersetzungen zu lesen
  • (fr) Veuillez employer l'hyperlien suivant pour lire des traductions disponibles
  • (it) Usi prego il seguente hyperlink per leggere le traduzioni disponibili
  • http://docs.indymedia.org/view/Global/SummariesIndex
(((i))) imc-summaries-wg (((i)))

Summary is posted to http://internal.indymedia.org

Publish the text on http://internal.indymedia.org (you may like to add any missing links to the project at this stage)

The text is now openly available and has been linked to the page where translations are being added.

Summary is emailed to imc-summaries@lists.indymediaSTOPSPAM.org

Simply copy from http://internal.indymedia.org the text you just posted (don't copy the posts' summary twice!). Then, before sending it to imc-summaries@lists.indymediaSTOPSPAM.org check that it has the translation text mentioned earlier. (All posts to imc-summaries are moderated, look at the bottom of the listinfo page if you need to contact the current list administrators.)

A brief of the summary is added to the next digect

Go to the next digest (choose the correct language!), add a brief (100-150 words) of the summary and a link to the post on internal.indy (look at old digests for examples)

Translations are requested

Look near the bottom on SummariesIndex to see who to send translation requests to.

At a set time the digest is sent out

The digest will be sent to imc-summaries@lists.indymediaSTOPSPAM.org and through the contact database

Update the SummariesIndex page

Remember, a digest which has been sent is 'current', one still under construction is 'next'.
  • 1. Go to SummariesIndex and add the digest you just sent to the 'current digest' section.
  • 2. Create a page for the next digest. In 'edit' mode the text should be similar to this:

Summaries-Digest #1, Jan 2003

  • Notes:

//we do not currently have access to the contact databse - must get this soon. Rovin emailed marc and commwork about this on Dec 26th: http://lists.indymedia.org/mailman/public/imc-commwork/2002-December/001302.html

//Translations are handled in exactly the same way as any other summary. Because all summaries have a multilingual link to the SummariesIndex, and that page is multilingual, this should work well.

// we have not chosen our target languages yet. We currently have a possibility for English, French and Spanish. Some discussion has taken place on imc-process about prefered languages and there is this page in the contact database: http://indymedia.org/contact/languages.php

Definitions.

SUMMARY

You can think of a summary as a piece of text summarising and describing the activities of a group. Sometimes the word 'article' is probably more suitable, but we will use summaries.

A 'summary' is a text of no specific format but which MUST include the following: 1. some form of contact details for people wanting more information 2. an introductory paragraph, not more than 150 words, to orient people to the content of the text

A 'summary' SHOULD include the following: 1. links to a webpage which hold documents related to the project(s) the text is about 2. links to the sign-up page of (the main) email lists used

A 'summary' MAY be written as a feature for an IMC would be, it would then be most important that the first paragraph is well written so people follow this to the full text posted on http://internal.indymedia.org which will display html functions

MULTILINGUAL LINK TEXT

Here it is!

  • (en) Please use the following hyperlink to read available translations
  • (sp) Utilice por favor el hyperlink siguiente para leer traducciones disponibles
  • (de) Verwenden Sie bitte den folgenden Hyperlink, um vorhandene Übersetzungen zu lesen
  • (fr) Veuillez employer l'hyperlien suivant pour lire des traductions disponibles

BRIEF

This is simply another word for summary, we can't keep using it to mean different things. In this case it means a short piece from the beginning of each summary text.

DIGEST or SUMMARIES DIGEST

A text distributed regularly which brings together summaries into a format people can quickly browse to find things they are interested in. NEXT DIGEST is the digest which we are collecting but has not been sent. CURRENT DIGEST is the most recent digest which people are currently reading.

PROJECT

A 'project' is any group of people discussing or working on something which is relevant to the indymedia as a global network. Individual IMC's are encouraged to share their projects with the network in order to strengthen 'network concienceness'

COMMUNICATION

Communication means that people are informed about each others activities.

OPENNESS

Openness means that people have the possibility to become informed about others activities.

NETWORK CONCIENCIOUSNESS

This exists when people in indymedia have a sense that they are part of a larger network. Important side effects of 'network conciousness' are improved communication, improved decisionmaking, improved accountability. Network conciousness is not missing from indymedia, but it is only felt by a small group of people.
