Abstract:
The first Indymedia Regional Meeting in Africa is taking place these Days in Dakar, the Capital of Senegal. Many Delegates from African based IMC's (forming as well as approved) are present. And after a long Trip, the Boundaries to Bridges Caravane arrived at the conference. The two week event has the title "the Alternative (Indymedia) Conference" to embolden participants who though interested and involved in alternative media may have never have anything to do with indymedia.

TextThe approach of the conference is to get into the theoritical bases of indymedia as well as laying the ground work for future co-operation and working-together of imcs in Africa. The hope is to achieve this by encouraging the African activists presently interested to get a profound discussion on the theoritical and practical issues between themselves and other indymedia activists with experience in the working of the network from elsewhere. Anticipating in the process to attain a deep understanding of the concepts on which indymedia is built. Expecting that will lead to forming durable and community serving local imcs, which is the departure point of indymedia.
A group of Europe based activists gathered from Europe and North Africa in Almeria (Spain) in October 2003 from where a caravan moved to St. Louis (Senegal) via Sevilla (Spain), Ceuta, SETI camp (Morrocco), Larache(Morrocco), The Sahara, Mauritania and finally Senegal, where the tour has ended (March 2004).
No Border groups and individuals, artists, scientists, musicians and technicians of all origins collaborated to launch the multilingual 'Boundaries to Bridges' which generated activities and actions such as:
Cultural Exchange: The Caravan served as a platform for talks, workshops, info-exchanges,parties, circus and theatre performances and also had a mobile cinema showing documentaries and films covering themes of immigration and frontiers. It was open for all to participate. Also involved were self organized migrant groups from Morrocco and Senegal living in Spain and Morroco, alongside a host of other disparate individuals and groups.
Technological Cooperation: We collaborated with local groups and initiatives to facilitate the exchange of equipment and knowledge in the fields of migration, detention centres and border issues, alternative energy and transportation systems, local sustainability and information technology.
