Indymedia Africa tour project (Boundaries to Bridges)

We are in October-2003 and the first part the tour by activists to Africa have started in Spain . I do understand that logistics, finance and other technical problems have left activists in a situation where they at times feel reluctant to participate in certain discussions. Yet if we are able to discuss and get a clear concept of what we wish to do, it will be easier to start the process of looking for the resources to push our project to get african activist involved in the imc network. Apart from trying to relay the information to activists in Africa by mail/phone, this time we planned to use the platform of the Btb-tour to run workshops on indymedia, in the hope to get give a better understanding on imdymedia to the African activists.

More detailed Tour Calendar:

Equipment needed

-We need material to run the workshops; I propose the following :
  1. -A beamer
  2. -Five computers (at least)
  3. -Three video recording machines and a video editting machine. 100 video cassettes.
  4. -Three mini-disc recorder/audio recording machines. 200 pieces of mini-disc/tapes.
  5. -Three printers.
  6. -5 small radio transmitters.
  7. - 10 video cassettes of films made by other indymedia video working groups to be used in screening .

Software needs

  1. -We need to ask indymedia-tech to load the computers for use in the tour with one of the many freesoftware Operating System.
  2. -Need a portable version of an indymedia production system which allows articles and other content to be published and produced on the computer without internet connection.
  3. -We need an easy to use audio editing program.
  4. -We need an easy to use video editing program.
  5. -We need an easy to use lay-out program.

Delegations to Alternative Media(Indymedia Africa) Conference.

In Senegal-Dakar is the part of the tour for alternative Media festival which we plan to use for a Conference. The focus of this Conference will be indymedia in Africa. My proposal is that :
  • 1-Each imc in Africa; both forming and already approve by the network send two delegates to the meeting in Senegal.
  • 2-And each African imc can include one other activists who is in the field of alternative media stuff-potential imcer.
  • 3-Then we can also have room for two activists from any of the local groups in the countries we are going to go throw in this tour-Morocco, Mauritania and Senegal .
  • 4- 6places for any other IMC activists from the global North or elsewhere with a long-time experience with indymedia wishing to attend the Senegal conference and help with running workshops.
  • 5- 2places for any other activists who is not necessary a part of the network but could be proposed by an imc in the network or a network working group.

    • Thus making :

-3 places each from Ambazonia, Canaries Islands, Egypt, Kenya, Estrecho , Nigeria , South Africa, Zimbabwe .

-2 places each for activists from Morocco, -Mauritania and Senegal.

-6 place for activists with expereince and know-how from the network this is to avoid transportation to be a hindrance to network experience activists who wish to make the trip and help-out with workshops an technical know-how.

-2places for anyone from many of the imc-network sister projects going on in many places who may which also to help-out as well.

Thus am in effect proposing that we take responsibility to look for funds to pay the transport of all this delegates and any extra delegates will have to be responsible for their own transportation.

  • I propose that each approved IMC discuss the above proposal in their local group. And if a decision is arrived at the person they wish to send to Senegal they can then send the persons contact information to a co-ordinator. names for the above list be sent to the email address of the co-ordinator . The information sent to the Co-ordinator should also include transport cost from present location to Dakar-Senegal be included. These information is needed to help us come-up with a budget for the conference. This will intern ease fund raising for the Conference.

Website (http://imc-in-africa.so36.net)

  • where is the caravan right now?
  • are there any pictures?
  • when can we put the feature up on de.indymedia.org?
  • feature at www.indymedia.org?

  • creating features on imc-in-africa site?
  • which topics?
  • advertising (mail to groups - indy - others)

Task Distribution

  • Though lots of efforts have been put into outreach , we still need more outreach done. So we need more people to volunteer and take resposibility for more outreach both in the three countries were the tour will take place and in other parts of Africa as well as spreading the infromation out in the network.
  • More volunteers to focus on mobilisation of technical resouces. That is keep contact with imc-techsolidarity as well as contact and request both from other IMCs and other technical/media projects for donations of equipment.
  • We are still trying to put together a budget; it will be nice to get a volunteer with exprience on stuff like this to act like the Co-odinator.
