(red)

Frattini's ministry has said that, after the "vile intimidatory acts" agains the leader and the deputy leader of the Popular European party in the European parliament, Hans-Gert Poettering and Jose' Ignazio Salafranca, and the deputy leader of the Socialist party in the European parliament, Gary Titley, Frattini has sent them a message in which he expresses the solidarity of the Italian government and his personal solidarity following these new "abominable criminal gestures against the European institutions and their representatives". TERRORISM: PISANU MEETING, DE GENNARO AND NOBLE (INTERPOL)
(AGI) - Rome, 12 January - There has been a further Interior Ministry meeting about anarcho-insurrectionalist terrorism. Taking part were Interior Minister, Giuseppe Pisanu, chief of police, Prefect Gianni De Gennaro, and Interpol, secretary general, Ronald Noble. The two high functionaries told Pisanu that they have agreed on the adoption of new preventative measures in the light of the recent terrorist threat at a European level. In particular, on the technical level, the new measures allow for using Interpol's global communication network, called "I-24/7", which allows for 181 national Interpol offices to communicate in real time with the Lyons General Secretariat. It will thus allow for information about bombs etc. to be communicated instantly. Via the communication network, indeed, all countries connected to the database will be able to receive signals, pictures and photos necessary for the police. Technically, 'I-24/7, or Interpol Global Communications Network, is a system guaranteed by its own line and sophisticated encription. The Interpol Global Communications System further allows each country directly to consult the computer databases of Interpol HQ in Lyons on people on the run, on suspected terrorists, on stolen cars, on I.D. and travel cards that have been robbed or cloned. Via this system it is thus possible to transmit signals and alerts.

Terrorism: Fourth EU Letter Bomb, Eurojust Targeted
Date: Tuesday, 30 December 2003 18:23
Policy Area: From the World
(ANSA) - Brussels, December 30 - A parcel bomb has been sent to Eurojust in The Hague, the Dutch public prosecutor's office said here today.
A spokesperson said that the letter was delivered to the European Union's judicial liaison quarters this morning.
This was the fourth such letter sent to the European Union's institutions during the last week.
The spokesperson said that investigators were seeking to ascertain whether the letter had been posted in Bologna, as with the previous three packages, and if the sender was the same.
Police have said they think that anarchists are behind the letter-bombing campaign, which has seen explosive devices sent to European Commission Chief Romano Prodi, Europol and the head of the European Central Bank Jean-Claude Trichet.
So far, no one has been hurt.
Judicial sources today confirmed that the sender listed on the Trichet packet was a non-existent publishing house on Via dei Terribilia, Bologna, the site of an attempted 2001 attack on a nearby police station. They also revealed that the sender's name on the Europol packet was that of a 19th-century French anarchist, Emile Henry.
Security measures at all European institutions have been stepped up.

Terrorism: Bologna Prosecutors Block All Parcels For EU
Date: Wednesday, 31 December 2003 14:51
Policy Area: From the World
(ANSA) - Bologna, December 31 - The Bologna public prosecutor's office has issued a decree blocking all parcels sent from Emilia Romagna that are currently en route to European Union institutions, offices and related bodies.
The decree will allow police to examine packets still in sorting offices and scan them to make sure they contain no dangerous substances, thereby preventing further terrorist attacks.
This is one of a series of security reinforcement measures for European institutions after four parcel bombs sent from Bologna were delivered to EU officials or offices last week. European Commission President Romano Prodi, the director of the European Central Bank (ECB) Jean Claude Trichet, Eurpol and Eurojust all received similar parcels.
Prodi has called for people to stand "united against terrorism, against all those who seek to break political, cultural and military harmony".
He described 2003 as a difficult year, marked by the war on Iraq, which "divided governments and created unease". On that note, he expressed the hope that 2004 would allow "the broken threads to be retied" and said that one such occasion for this could be the European Union's enlargement in May.

Terrorism: Letter-Bombs To EU Institutions From Bologna
Date: Tuesday, 30 December 2003 14:33
Policy Area: From the World
(ANSA) - Rome, December 30 - The anarchists sending letter bombs appear to be focusing on the European Union's institutions.
After a letter bomb exploded in European Commission President Romano Prodi's hands on Saturday, another two letter bombs were delivered to European Central Bank President Jean-Claude Trichet yesterday, one in Frankfurt and the other in The Hague.
Both appear to have been sent from Bologna and were intercepted by German and Dutch security agents. Neither of the attacks caused any harm.
While investigations continued yesterday, Interior Minister Giuseppe Pisanu summoned a meeting at the Interior Ministry and will address parliament on the issue immediately after the holidays.
Preliminary investigations have revealed that an Italian anarchist network appears to be behind all three attacks.

Three outstanding members of the European Parliament were object yesterday on attempts of attack in a new episode of the mysterious terrorist campaign with explosive letters that for 15 days have been going against the UE. Efe, Brussels
The big wave of insolvent attacks, has shot all the alarms in the institutions of the UE in this beginning of year. The campaign of letter-bomb, triggered apparently from Italy by grupúsculos anarchists, began the 27 of December with an explosive shipment directed to the address in Bologna of the president of the Commission of the UE, the Italian Prodi Roman, who did not undergo wounds in spite of to have opened personally the letter.
The taken safety measures since then, including the decision at the end of year of the Office of the public prosecutor of Bologna to block all the postal shipments sent from that Italian city to the different seats from the communitarian institutions, have not prevented that the dangerous packages reached yesterday the European capital and the British city of Manchester.
