Thursday blurb
Five years since the original software built to power open-source publishing was written by Sydney's Catalyst collective, Indymedia has changed and grown
dramatically. Today more than 150 Indymedia collectives exist across
the globe. What were the original ideas of Indymedia and have they stood up to reality? Are they still relevant today? What are the challenges in
creating a truly democratic and participatory media and which way should Indymedia go in the future?
You are invited to come along and discuss with members of Indymedia
Adelaide, Aotearoa (NZ), Brisbane, Jakarta, UK, Perth, Manila, Sydney, Quezon City, Darwin, Vancouver, Melbourne and Global collectives.
When/Where: 7.pm, Thursday July 15, Irene Warehouse, 5 Pitt St,
Brunswick.
Friday Night
The Oceania Indymedia Conference presents:
ruff/cut: never before screened footage of the forthcoming film by Naomi Klein and Avi Lewis.
THE TAKE
In the wake of Argentina’s spectacular economic collapse in 2001, Latin America’s most prosperous middle class finds itself in a ghost town of abandoned factories and mass unemployment. In suburban Buenos Aires, thirty unemployed auto-parts workers walk into their idle factory, roll out sleeping mats and refuse to leave. All they want is to re-start the silent machines. But this simple act — the take — has the power to turn the globalization debate on its head.

GarconDuMonde - 20 Jun 2004
OK, so i started this today (Saturday)... i was playing around with some of the ideas in the ideas soups - on the
ImcOceania2004Workshops page, which was where i had archived some ideas off emails to the imc-oceania list, and
ImcOceania2004Ideas which was where the original lot of ideas were (although also some of the ideas for other stuff that is happening during the conference).
anyway, my basic strategy evolved to the following:
- there seemed to be a few different 'themes' around which workshop ideas had been proposed - detailed above under 'themes'
- some people like small group workshops: these are also useful in conjunction with feeback sessions. other people like big workshops that they can just listen. My preference is for the smaller workshops as, after all, indymedia is meant to be a participatory process. I have tried to construct the timetable so that there is flexibility for either.
- another consideration is how many people actually turn up. i guess that people will be more around (and awake!) for the later workshops.
- i have changed the times for the start and finish to allow for a complete(ish) day, whilst also allowing enough time to get dinner/food before the evening's movie.
- i first thought about putting similar sessions in parallel, but then thought that muddling it up in serial was better as some workshops (eg finance and people and indymedia for profit?! sessions seemed to crossover somewhat)
