Indymedia has become a vital part of the communications system of the global justice movement but is it living up to this challenge and what might make it better? What is the relationship between media activism, indymedia and social movements and what does the future hold? A participatory discussion.
Subplot
Media Activism and Social Movements
Net based media activism emerged as a form in it's own right with the explosion of the anti-capitalist movements as an attempt to politicise the social relations of communication both within the movement and against the dominant media. But just how successful has it actually been? Is media activism just for socially inept geeks and the uber chic or is it much more? How effective is it being at communicating? Indymedia activists will facilitate an open discussion.

Accommodation
Turrella
There is room for about 10 people to stay at Turrella (
http://cat.org.au/where.html). Turrella is an old ice cream factory which is currently inhabited by a variety of artists, activists, various tradespeople, and a Muslim prayer group. It is currently the site of the cat@lyst and sydney indymedia spaces.
For people wanting to sleep at Turrella, you need to know that the residents have had bad experiences with groups of people attending activist events in the past, and have therefore requested that the following rules apply to guests:
- Clean up after yourself. This includes kitchen, bathroom, and sleeping areas.
- Be nice to the residents... they've put up with a lot to keep the space accessible for uses like this.
- Be quiet in the residential areas at night. Many residents have to get up early for work.
If all this is okay with you, let me know for sure that you are coming, and want to stay at Turrella by sending an email to stacy(AT)cat.org.au
