About Sydney Indymedia

Note: This document is taken from: sydney imc faq

Instead of relying on the corporate media machine, we are making our own media.

An Indymedia Centre is two things- a website and a physical space.

  1. The Sydney Indymedia website will be a permanent record of our experience of protesting many social injustices. An alternative, activist record of events and experiences Sydney IMC will include text, audio, video stories and images.

The content on this site will come directly from activists, citizens and communities. Sydney Indymedia is a truly democratic, two way medium. Anyone can contribute text, audio, images or video. These are published instantaneously. Visitors to the site can post comments or replies to stories, developing dialogue and debate.

  1. The Sydney Independent Media Centre is a place for activists, and witnesses participating in protest to come in and upload their stories onto the website.

Sydney IMC works on a local and global level to create collectively run media outlets for the creation of radical, objective, and passionate tellings of the truth.

WHAT ARE THE AIMS OF INDYMEDIA ?

" We don't want the corporate media to do the thinking for us, nor do we want simply to 'transmit' alternative perspectives, we want to provide an online forum for discussion and debate, unfiltered by gatekeepers. Like the socratic town square, only online with text, audio, video and graphics. Obviously it is only one means of having good conversations, but the internet is a cheap and accessible medium for many people and it can be used by many people at least in Western nations."

" By applying open-source thinking, ideas , opinions and news are posted up on the IMC site and if anyone feels they can improve they simply post up their take on the issue. As the community posts up it's thoughts, by default consensus opinion is reached.

"Indymedia Centres offer an intellectual tool kit, with case studies, to interpret the public rhetoric of organisations, be they mainstream media, governmental, corporate, non-profit or simply individuals. By teasing out the likely truth from the information soup that surrounds us and putting coherent meaning into events as they happen enables us to assert our course in the world in a more secure way, and thus our identity."

"Independent media aims to enable freedom of thought and action and centers upon the formation and evolution of identity. Its hope is to stimulate the educational process of becoming, the assertion of self through integration with knowledge."

WHAT DOES THE INDYMEDIA CENTRE DO?

Some of the many Indymedia activities include: software development, communityoutreach, construction of a physical space, liaison with mainstream media, fundraising, research and reporting, design.
