IS THERE AN EDITORIAL POLICY? WHO GETS TO SPEAK?

This question is constantly debated amongst Indymedia participants. There is no formal editorial policy, and IMC aims for an open-access and unmoderated space. Some of the discussions so far:

    • "Framing up an editorial policy is a difficult but necessary task. My (sic) own view on this is that we try and be as minimalist as possible with as few editorial policy guidelines as possible."

    • "I don't see any value in running polemical stuff that's dystopian or even utopian, because I think it's a sure way to lose credibilty as a genuine news service."

    • "I'm afraid we could too easily indulge ourselves preaching to the converted. If we are going to engage with change...we need to engage with the opponents of change, or at least with the undecided."

    • "I want to say that we are NOT responsible for other people's ideas/ feelings/ opinions, even if we do help them participate in discussion through Indymedia."

    • "Conflicts and misunderstandings are not resolved by trying to silence or ignore them. Or by keeping ourselves nice and separate. It is okay to say with Voltaire "I do not agree with a word you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it."
