Meeting about a new Mir Server,

possibly hosted at Calyx

03 Dec 2004

present: ana, Chrisc, Ekes, gdm, pabs, r7, clara, ga, machine mario, billsf, nick: calyx

Following are notes from the meeting, also the raw irc log is available:

agenda

  • 1. Colocating with Calyx in Amsterdam - questions
  • 1.1 - legal issues
  • 1.2 - technicial issues
  • 2. Hardware
  • 3. Colocation options: riseup | xs4all | calyx

1.1 legal issues

  • a dutch foundation (similar to a US 501) would be favorable: but we haven't heard back from "Friends of Indymedia" in NL yet
  • a UK legal entity will need time to be set up, but the new server should get up soon
  • if Friends of Indy doesn't work out, we can find alternatives
  • Friends of Indymedia should meet with calyx lawyers

1.2 technical issues

  • Calyx does not log IP addresses of requests to customer webservers. Calyx has several upstream providers, several of which are actually American but with presence in Amsterdam. Who knows what they might do? Calyx also has gigabit connectivity to the Amsterdam Internet Exchange, and the Dutch government is known to tap that.
  • level3, abovenet, telefonica 100Mbps & 1Gb peering @ AMS-IX
  • recommend that indymedia use crypto hardware in the server and encrypt all requests, see UkCrypto

2 Hardware

  • hope to raise about 3,000 pounds, thinking a dual opteron with 8gig or so of ram might be doable
  • we were thinking of putting debian on it since the nl imc people know this best
  • bandwidth estiamte: to be used as Mir production server, uploads and admin stuff happening, and this is all https already. guess at perhaps 100-200 gb per month perhaps - the mirrors take most of the load (uk at the moment: about 6 or so mirrors doing around 70gb per month)
  • costs in NL: 3000 Euros for the Opteron, 1,5GB - http://www.rackserver.nl/documentviewer.html?sDocName=pageCustomProduct&ProdID=1190
  • prebuilt vs. a kit of bits: prebuilt: better warrents, kits: cheaper, discussion about crypto hardware card will be dealt with in more detail another time. See UkCrypto
  • physical access: preferabley one truste techie (like zapata) should physical access (like micah and others have to berkman colocated at calyx). calyx is easy to reach by public transport.
  • calyx has direct BGP peering with most dutch ISPs, and they BGP with everybody
  • somebody (zapata) would need a pass and a key. In addition, calyx can fix problems as they also already fixed berkamn

mailing list

  • imc-clayx
  • closed archives
  • chrisc applies for it

alternatives

  • riseup has a colo in seattle (http://seaccp.org/) and would not require a legal body for a contract. Disadvantage: no physical access, but stefani offered to deal with hard disc failures. there are advantages and disadvantages of (not) having a legal body and between EU and US laws
  • xs4all has not answered chrisc mails. Legal situation same as with Calxy, but Calyx is a smaller organisation then the big KPN daughter and interested in actually supporting indymedia in what we are doing.

-> write up both options (riseup, calyx) and discuss them on different lists see UkHostingComparisons
