    • Getting more people involved and open publishing more like the website
    • Video blog (indytorrents?)
    • Creating a resource network out of indymedia. Portland indymedia coming out of the scene.
  • Tell more of our own personal stories through video, audio, written.
    • This get other people to write their own stories
    • Not chasing after "journalistic" stories .. tsunami, etc.
    • The events happen over and over agin...but, one's personal experience is not fleeting.
    • Blogging? differences?
  • Multilingual audio programming
    • Spanish, Chinese, Tai Rebroadcast if we have to... need to share the same politics
    • Streamline video and audio production
    • We don't need perfect knowledge to move forward
    • Indymedia is dynamic, a project that is not finished or obsolete
    • Hard to break out of bubble to reach out
    • Obstacles?
      • Tools being accessible
      • Space being in order, small
      • Non-techy
      • Higher bitrate stream
      • FM
    • Have to deal with challenges
    • More positive gender aware content
    • Last year:
      • moved audio studio "out of the basement"
      • good election coverage, even handed
      • indymedia keeps people activated in liberal community after loss of election
      • glad to be a part
  • Last year
    • Went to visioning meeting, didn't know what her place was.
    • Written a couple of things for website
    • Did some radio and was able to verbally communicate at last major event
    • Did wife and mommy thing and then got involved in indymedia and found what she can do (as a person)
    • Did flyering and fundraising
    • Folks pushed her to do things and is grateful for being part of a good group
    • Austin indymedia conference .. good to see other imcs do things differently
    • Most rewarding: First time on radio ... started crying... couldn't verbalize... last action on radio was able to flow..cried out of happiness last time...Cool to see newswire article
    • Wish we did better at tech benefit.
  • Focused on writing for the next year
  • Need to share portland process with other imcs... could be helpful to them... as theirs are important to us
  • Indymedia was like a life buoy during a tough personal time
  • This shows what the difference between corporate media and indymedia is... community? ... corporate media is competitive * Publish button is awesome, getting behind the mic is awesome with no barriers

  • This year marked 2 year anniversary of working with indymedia
  • Last year spent time travelling and doing outreach about portland indymedia and the way it works
  • PDX IMC has been doing very well because the people involved with it... because of the selflessness... its not for the people in the room...but for others
  • Has been getting involved in other indymedia projects...and they are more frustrated
  • Indymedia has helped to shape him as a person
  • Expand the community on a larger scale while keeping the base.... more like a community outreach project
  • Help individuals feel more empowered as it does to him personally
  • Gets a lot of calls about how PDX IMC has handled certain issues
  • Wants to put together documentations about how we have to come this...
  • Solid trunk of tree now... need to grow branches... share model
  • Focused on documentation and share knowledge...and history...to others struggling.
  • Frustrating to not see new people in the room when he came back from travelling
  • Outreach to schools... getting out of bubble...even when travelling
  • Other IMC folks would be audience for the docs
  • View of security culture has changed. Security culture is very tight on east coast. ... perhaps that people don't seem to be able to be friends.... sometimes security culture gets in the way of building trust....
  • Most problems that are asked about are organizational structures.
  • Process based on "Trust" rather than process.

  • Struggling with working with new technologies versus the possibility of immenent collapse of technology ...Need to build something that transcends technology
  • Feels like he doesn't have a complete vision... needs others vision to complete his...
  • The fucked up things in the world have cause personal anxiety... seeing others with similar visions is a lifeboat
  • Wants to find his role
  • indymedia has a lot of potential, still untapped
  • What happens after technology crash? Sustainability?
  • get people to contribute ideas for post crash a la adbusters
  • infrastructure ... wireless
  • evolve to a communication infrastructure for apocalyptic state of things

  • involvement has gone through many phases
  • started out with organizing convergences
  • Is now much more willing to speak his part...this has been a major growth..a direct result of being involved with indymedia
  • He had the ability... but noth the courage or the knowledge of how to stand up
  • Has come to the place where he is ready to counted...not as necessary to hide identity... maybe because of how high stakes are
  • This has helped to stand up at work... was able to organize workers... may have pissed off other people... but stood up anyway... need to conquer fears
  • The importance of truth is paramount
  • Need to allow people in our communities to be wrong and view things as opportunities to get better
  • Convergences are some of the most intense and awesome experiences... lot energy and resources into a small focused thing.
    • trying to stay more focused

  • A year and a half ago went to Miami as first big convergence using indymedia tactic from another location
  • Met a few portland folks...first intro to portland folks
  • Portland folks were encouraging
  • Some people are threatened or intimidated by portland... but by and large groups she has encountered have respect more or less
  • at first she felt like there was some arrogance
  • No reason to be shy about the successes here
  • Wants to move to portland because of PDX IMC
  • Indymedia here is based on a community and based on personal relationships
  • Focused on the small scale and the immediate surroundings... recognize big picture but not getting lost in things
  • There doesn't seem to be a hierarchy of knowledge.... people seem to find there place
  • Website is real and easy to use
  • Having met others here have made her stronger
  • Excited about audio for next year
  • possibly doing a news show next year
  • Neighborhood news show?
  • Fell into indymedia... didn't have a clear vision what indymedia the tactic should be before....previous activism was in anti * war group...felt it was dis * empowering...when the war started it felt like time was wasted...don't need to put time into such a huge thing....need to find things that are more immediate
  • Previous indymedia had the attitude that there is a "right way to do things"... too much polish for her... doesn't sound natural...doesn't want to sound like NPR...was hard for individuals to get involved

  • Started to get involved one year ago
  • Held back from indymedia because it seemed that everything was really polished on website and videos might require too much technical skill
  • Went to journalism school and still didn't feel qualified
  • Let two other queers go first... and then felt ok to get on board
  • Wants to make indymedia more relevant to the queer community... not a lot of articles
  • Feels like even the radical queer community is shying away a bit... this is because there is a perception that all groups are heterosexist
  • Wants to do more outreach
  • Wants to do more print... doesn't have the time or resources to organize it...can't commit to all projects
  • Got a lot of encouragement from doing some radio and the number of listening
  • Not a lot of new people have come in... only a few over the year... maybe it's because we "look" like a real tight knit group
  • Likes the idea of putting out the stories of how people came to indymedia as a way to get people to not be intimidated about getting involved.
  • Likes the idea of doing different things with the site... likes the idea of generating a discussion
  • Outreach: Talking to people at queer events... get audio from queer events...tabling
  • Doesn't feel tokenized....he knew that he was doing a token queer show on the radio...wanted there to be more of a voice about queer issues.
  • Wants to let other queers know that indymedia is ok.
  • Doesn't want to go out and get different groups involved just to have different groups involved
  • Portland indymedia is pretty queer but it's hard to see from the outside

  • Has been clarifying his vision of what he wants to do for the past year
  • Feels it's important to separate: "I agree and how do we get there"....and "I don't agree and what should we do"
  • Back in the day used indymedia as poster.... fought against trolls to try to educate... found little effectiveness..
  • Now wants to create the alternative and not argue about what to do
  • His vision is focused not focused on discussion, but the goal is to focus on info... comments are expand on articles....not the central function
  • Re-posting and discussion are an easy paradigm... tied into the consumption of news... people haven't questioned this... people should be active creators of news
  • Became careful about using the word "we"....because this just tries to gain power to their argument... it was empowering to state his own perspective on its own.
  • Wants to push the online video distribution (www.indytorrents.org)... Peer to Peer in general... people need to have these skills
  • Focusing also on website functionality... wants to do multiple newswires...thinks it help focus people on local issues
  • Need to watch the fact that portland is a popular site and encourage people to use their indymedia
  • Moving away from getting readership as a goal since portland is popular....moving into the empowerment model.... getting more people to write... even if less people read
  • Skills and community building is more empowerment... Portland indymedia will help to teach people even after indymedia goes away or mutates
  • Takes on things because he believes in the project.... but without tech editorial projects would not work right...
  • Need to do more cross * training....technological tools for sharing

  • Found himself "preaching the gospel of indymedia" to folks outside of Portland or outside of the IMCN
  • KEY is open publishing... no printing press required
  • Global, unlimited access to media tools
  • Thinks we should accept the responsibility of the national eye
  • IMCistas as straight up enablers
  • Students becoming teachers becoming students
  • Creating a community that does not already exist... composed of people who share a common vision
  • We do not have to be all things to all people
  • Not willing to sacrifice the vision of indymedia only for the sake of inclusiveness
  • Wants to do more outreach
  • Content producers becoming content enablers
  • Has a hard time doing the outreach... more comfortable in skill share setting
  • Maybe go to other groups with a presentation about PDX IMC
  • Doesn't want to do the organizing... he's happy just doing the grunt work
  • Super excited about radio project taking off

  • Feels like she excels in organizing... wants to team up with people who are into the idea of outreach
  • First exposure to Indymedia was during the WTO in Seattle and her first issue of Slingshot
  • Eventually discovered the PDX site through indymedia.org... started taking video cameras to protests
  • Emailed video collective and never got a reply... a year later organized fund raisers for Cascadia Summer and met someone who had been working for PDX IMC
  • Got help and advice from individuals and started running video showings
  • Mentoring as a tactic for incorporating new folks
  • Wants more people to try and break the social barrier when new people show up by mentoring people who they feel they might be comfortable with
  • Defines indymedia activism as enabling... your work as a tool for other people to use
  • Making a community that makes media
  • Producing content can be used as a means of encouraging new communities to use indymedia resources
  • Wants indymedia resources to be known outside of "activist" communities
  • Involvement in the group will naturally come from people using our media tools
  • Recognizes the broad reach of PDX IMC, but wants us to reach further into the Portland community
  • Rediscovered her spunk through PDX IMC
  • Got over the fear of doing things wrong
  • Back in the habit of speaking her mind, developing her sense of self
  • Developed healthy friendships that work both ways
