Background
The National Association of Broadcasters (
NAB)
"Radio Show" is coming to San Diego Oct. 6-8, 2004. These events have been met with protests in the past see San Francisco because the NAB is an industry tool that lobbies a (very willing) Federal Communications Commission to slowly eliminate all barriers to monopolization, leading to loss of local programming, and diversity on the airwaves.
For more background, see the Open Letter to the NAB, from the 2000 NAB actions:

Brainstorm
-thanks for creating this page Charles, I was just thinking that we should start something like this.
-here are some of my thoughts for what i'd like to see happen at our nab2004 event
- constructive discussions on how to build more powerful independent media distribution centers. real, specific nitty gritty strategizing on how to get our media out to more people and make our messages heard.
- serious thought and investigation into what it is indymedia is doing. is it objective journalism? is it tactical media? is it credible? is it honest, person to person communication? finding out ways to be the most effective and to create space for all of the things people want to do within indymedia.
- the state of corporate media today. consolidations, mergers, corporate conflicts of interest, fcc rule changes. smaller, indy type of projects like local weeklies. the NAB's role in all of this.
- infowar. i'd love to get a hold of shock's video on info in miami and show it here. methods that the administration is manipulating information against popular movements. embedded journalists inside the US.
- possibly a internet broadcast of the forums, or of submitted work from people around the country. something similar to the WSIS stuff, where they took submissions from people who couldn't come to the conference and rebroasdcast them.
- media across borders. how information sharing can break down borders. how information control is related to migration control. successes and failures in cross border media collaboration.
i think there's more that I had to say, but I can't think of any more right now...
it would be great if we could all use this space to brainstorm and build on each other's ideas.
HI!!! I Hope people read this because this shit makes no sense to me but LISTEN!!!
I have contacted no logo - which i realize someone else did and i asked them if they can't send a speaker to send ideas or give us publicity or something.
i filled in a form on democracy now for a story idea and i am waiting to hear back from them.
beatriz de costa hasn't gotten back to me but i really think that critical art ensemble could put on a fucking dope tactical media workshop - this workshop would be awesome to have irregardless but is you check out their web page they have brilliant examples of their past work.
www.critical-art.net
I will send her another e-mail but...
I printed out mad flyers for the media.identity.and difference event that michael and i are organizing at the coffee house on broadway, sept 11th, 5-7. At the same time, but in Sherman Heights, there is an event 'Straight from the hood.' it is a live theatrical performance sponsored by the victory outreach center. Not that i don't want you all to come to our event but i think that someone should go and table there. It would get more community involvement.
I am going to contact the organization and see if we can team up for an idea-exchange.
I would really like to do an article for citybeat on the corporate consolidation of the media but i think that there might be a few road blocks - one of which is my overly verbose writing style and radical politics seems to have gotten me flagged as a crazy person to the editor. I am working my texas charm on him to let him know that I am not out to fuck up vitybeat but they are being sued right now and i think they are being extra careful. Don't ask me about the details of the lawsuit - because i just list music.
The same weekend of the NAB their is a Global Media Conference at Southern Illinois university. I am going to contact their organizers and see if we can do some sort of trans-coastal action. I was thinking like a live radiobroadcasted conversation - i mean i don't know. I will wait for them to get back to me and then we can talk ideas.
Last but certainly not least i am going to try and get in touch with some rich people in North County. I am still devising strategies but - I think i want to do like a film screening, and info session, some flyering, etc. I think i might drive up there tomorrow or sunday - If you are interested in coming along - gimme a ring a ding ding on my celly telly.
As you can tell Michael's film had a profoundly motivational impact on me and I am really committed to this.
in the words of my wise friend
capitalism is temporary
fuck the NAB
IM BACK - AGAIN
I asked Larry George - a Derridian scholar who writes on the Anti-Globalization movement to speak. I have seen him before and he is crazy cool, well thought, and can give us an radical philosophical perspective. We'll see what happens.
One thing we've talked about in the preliminary planning meeting is to make sure that there is plenty of outreach to the various music scenes. Concerts, open-mics, showcasing the music that is eliminated by corporate radio need to be an important part of the mix.
We don't want just talking heads talking about media in the abstract.

SdLotus - 28 May 2004 - added link to the open letter to the nab.
I'm still left wondering what role this TWiki site will play. Or is that what this discussion is about? Is this just a messageboard of sorts? Would it be more practical to use a real (freeware) messageboard like http://www.phpbb.com/ so we could have independent threads and a better GUI? I think this messageboard should link off of this TWiki site.
