This is the place to put it. Use any style you want -- journalistic, academic, or personal -- for telling your story.

Features and Newswire

The middle column is composed of features that are either selected from the newswire or written by the editorial collective. If you feel your story should be a feature, please email us. We work closely with social movements in San Diego, and hence the features we promote try to highlight those community struggles.

We have two newswires for open publishing, local and general. Our local newswire is for stories concerning San Diego and surrounding communities. Our general newswire is for non-local stories.

Process

Members of the editorial collective are empowered to make editorial changes to the website, and inform the collective afterwards. For issues requiring discussion, emails are sent to imc-sd at lists.indymedia.org. If you feel your article or comment was hidden without reason, please email us.

Articles that are hidden are only one click away from the main page, and can be found in the compost bin. Comments that are hidden are kept within an administrative database which is, unfortunately, unseeable by the public. For examples of comments and articles that have been hidden, click here.

After stories have been published, they can be edited according to the principles listed in this document, linked or featured by the collective maintaining this site. As a rule, indymedia editors will not change the words of others in a posted newswire article or comment unless specifically requested to do so by the author, or unless a compelling reason exists to do so (e.g., legal or safety), and in such a case, the action will be specifically acknowledged by the indymedia editor who made the change, in a comment to the same article.

Reasons

When someone abuses our trust, and posts a story that is far outside of, or in conflict with, the principles of this project, this website, or the global indymedia principles of unity, we may place editorial comment in it or perhaps hide it.

Examples of material that may be hidden include newswire posts that are racist, sexist, homophobic, anti-semitic or that clearly fly in the face of our mission to exchange news, dialogue and opinion that advances economic and social justice within our communities. Posts that personally slander someone may be hidden as well. Posts that serve as commercials for for-profit companies will be removed.

We respect and support a diversity of opinion, but our site, as well as other sites in the Indymedia network, has unfortunately been increasingly targeted by quantities of right-wing disinformation and hatred-promoting messages. We would appreciate it if such persons would instead use, or set up their own, websites, rather then subjecting our readers and posters to their objectionable cant. Collective

To be a part of the editorial collective, come to a meeting and begin helping in the editorial process via email by suggesting stories to promote, hide or edit. Anyone can start working or volunteering with sdimc as soon as possible. After trust is gained the volunteer can be added to the imc-sd email list where daily decisions and discussions occur.

We are all volunteers who through our passions for social justice are working with imc and other social groups as well, so please be patient if we don't get to your editorial request immediately. We try to respond to editorial questions within 24 hours. However, editorial collective members can still revisit editorial decisions with their concerns at any time in the future.
