- conflict resolution
- Len thinks it would be good to include a clause in the indy constitution obliging people to attend free mediation from community law centres if it's called for.
meeting started about 30 minutes late - not bad for indy, eh kids!
Conflict resolution
< s> constitution as in Indy
ImcNantesPrinciples of Unity? or sydney indy constitution? or ???
< Len> whatever - the priciples of unity are what I meant - couldn't remember the name
< Len> the community mediation thing is likely to vary from state to state - so I don't know if it would be appropriate for Aust wide
< Len> in NSW it's free - from community law centres
< Len> mainly this is just a proposal for Sydney to adopt
< Len> if you like - though as I said just now this proposal is for Sydney - it'd be great to propose this to Oceania but I'm not aware of what's available in free mediation in other states
< Len> but happy to draft something - I've got a model clause for legally binding mediation - but not for the informal variety
<@stacy-mtg> ok. i'll put that in the minutes
New IMC-Process liaison: Len - to sign up at lists.indymedia.org/mailman/listinfo/imc-process and send a list introduction
discussion about list admin - most spam emails are just discarded, some recently have been rejected (which informs the poster they're not accepted) and so there may have been a slight increase in spam. in future, will just be discarded again.
discussion about email forwarded from imc-legal and how that relates to sydney.... it basically was about some post that had been on indymedia.org.au site, which is registered to sydney imc under the whois registry.
discussion about aussie law in terms of defamation etc. there was an incident a few years back when something was posted about woomera detention centre to adelaide.indymedia.org and we received something from lawyers representing the company that runs the centre throuh the whois ... passed that onto Adelaide ... and I think we just ignored the rest or wrote back to say it wasn't anything to do with us as we weren't the publishers. Err have we moved on from this topic a bit?
[bit more discussion] - revolved somewhat around the sherman austin case and www.raisethefist.org but that was in a different country so can't really be used to 'learn from' that much.
end result: "nah... fuck it" - we decided to just ignore the post
discussion about going through new-imc process as a self-audit. proposal to be made to the lists. contingency plans for when sydney fails (if we decide to do it!) - self destruct?or perhaps learn from it. or take all the money and go to brasil? and take positive steps to improve ourselves.
further discussion that the process can include a period of time for changes to be made so that the collective can fall back within; or just do what the government does: stash the report in a drawer somewhere and forget about it.
Len points out that self criticism is a communist tactic, not anarchic
proposal idea: the suggestion is that sydney indymedia convene a series of meetings (face to face? or irc? or both) to discuss all the current principles of unity and to what degree that the collective meets them... as a self correcting process. If serious breaches are found the collective should take a specific amount of time (90 days?) to make improvements and then audit again? if the collective continues to fall outside of the
PoU? then disaffiliation should be considered and new imc
shane can find a bunch of references for network development evolution for people to read... thinking specifically of a couple of zines i have...
no-one had any problems with the idea of self-audit.
however, there then ensued a big discussion about whether we should bother, whether it was better to put effort into features etc. this turned into a massive discussion involving some issues like new volunteers joining and staying, etc.
action: end result (i think) was that we probably would do the self-audit, but shane is to send a proper email proposal to the list.
codebase discussion
drupal - where is the drupal 4.5 install??
found the old one - which has now been deleted and is a blank page
found the dada one -

NB: i guess i got a bit distracted at this stage and stopped taking minutes....
