Possible attendees are: sonia, shane, brandon, andy, hugh, stacy, gdm
Dates are 15-18th of july, in melbourne in 2004.
SUMMARY
There was interest organising the following workshops, stalls, whatever:
- GNU Privacy Guard (GPG) key signing
- Process (Consensus)
- Privacy policy
- pepperspray March 2004 video + other videos screening during SOS
(indyvidz etc)
- 4th world war video screening (bignoise.com)
- Intro to IMC for SOS conference.
- GDM has offered to do one on security and encryption (pgp, gpg).
- Hugh would like to give a workshop on organisational process including human issues.
WORKSHOPS (for SOS and/or Indymedia Conference):
(1) basic web and email security (INFORMATION SESSION)
An introductory session on basic security on the world wide web. What is
a secure website? What is secure email? Is my email secure? Should I
worry about security? How can I use security? This workshop will help to
provide an introduction to security for non-technical people.
Notes on (1)
i guess it can be run basically with one computer and a projector (or,
even, with just a presentation surface to write on, eg whiteboard) but
it would be good if there were a few computers for people to play around
on and practise. An hour is a good time length for this one
(2) organisational process including human issues ("looking after
ourselves") (FACILITATED DISCUSSION)
Indymedia (and activist groups) tend to be highly effective at acheiving
particular aims but suffer a high rate of 'burn-out' amongst people who
take part. Can we do better in looking after ourselves? This workshop
will discuss ways in which the process we carry out things can be
improved.
Notes on (2)
this workshop is probably most appropriate for during the oceania
conference itself, rather than the sos conference. as such, we would
prefer to do this workshop over the weekend.
(3) independent and activist media (FACILITATED DISCUSSION)
An introduction and discussion about Indymedia groups and other forms of
alternative media. We hope that this will provide a forum for indymedia
activists from around the Oceania region to help introduce new people to
the concept of open-publishing and to experience some of the different
ways that this can be implemented.
Notes on (3):
this workshop would definitely benefit from at least one computer that
is connected to the internet and also one that is connected to a
projector so that everyone is able to view what is on the monitor. we
may also try to bring a short slide show introducing some of the basics
of indymedia, although this is yet to be decided. it would be fun if
there were also some other computers linked up to the internet that
people could have a play around with in the latter part of the workshop,
perhaps uploading stories and media about the
SoS conference.
STALL Ideas
- Flyers, texts on : what is CAT ? what is Indymedia ? what is Open source ?
- CDs of open source/free software operatin systems (BLAG, Knoppix, Debian ...)
