Spaces - Camden Centre

  • Camden Centre will be the main IMC co-ordination space and media centre. It is located next to Kings Cross in the bloomsbury area of central london where all of the ESF workshops will take place, and near to the start of the demonstration on the sunday. Indymedia is sharing the space with other groups and working on the European Forum of Communication Rights. There will be several days of events, including a conference by http://www.schnews.org.uk

Note: there will be no accomodation at the camden centre and IMC will close at different times each evening

We have the Camden Centre from Thursday 14th - Sunday 17th

The Indymedia centre facilities and public access computers in the Bar will open each day at 9am.

They will close each day at different times:

Thursday: IMC Closes at 11.00pm
Friday: IMC Closes at 11.30pm
Saturday: IMC Closes at 11.30pm
Sunday: IMC Closes at 10.00pm

There will be daily IMC co-ordination meetings - times tbc.
There will also be daily audio production meetings in the evening.

The CAFE and BAR will house around 15 public access computers, Veggies (a catering organisation) will provide cheap foor over the four days, the bar will operate too smile

There are 4 other rooms for 15-20 people each. Designated as follows:

- Office and Dispatch - main co-ordination
- Room for reporting / features
- Room for audio and video editing
- Room for trainings

Things to be sorted...

    • What sort of connectivity does it have? UPDATE - Big Fat Pipe - More than enough!
    • Bar will be smoking, other rooms will be restricted
    • Veggies to provide food during day and evening
    • Will we use a pass system for main imc rooms?

Programme of Events

There is a developing programme for the main hall in camden centre, which can accomodate hundreds and cannot be broken down into smaller events. There will be rooms made available at a nearby university for workshops and smaller events.

For the initial outline of Camden Centre events see ImcUkEsfCamdenFlyer

Programme can be expanded to include various other projects (see below), meetings and workshops.

Spaces - Beyond ESF

Another Autonomous Space - see http://www.altspaces.net/ This will be at Middlesex University Campus, in North London - so it becomes the nearest base to Allexandra Palace (20 mins away) and is expected to be the main autonomous hub space. There is a room with connectivity that can be used as an IMC space for reporting and co-ordination. Some computers should be supplied by imc london, other space will be for laptops. An area has been scouted for setting up wireless access also. London Hacklab interested in helping co-ordinate and install. The space will have food for donations, daily programming and events, evening meetings, entertainments and films.

See also listing here:

http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/2004/09/297464.html

And the main ESF news page:

http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/actions/2004/esf/

Spaces - Other Media Production Nodes

BEYOND ESF: will have a media centre room with round 15 computers and perhaps wireless. Access will be until 11pm approx.

RAMPARTS SOCIAL CENTRE: East London - indymedia access point - The RampART? Centre will have around 20 imc/alt media computers and a crew working on video production, as well as streaming radio on the web.

RADIO STREAMING AT ALLY PALLY: AMARC and Community Media Association are trying to gain a space at Ally Pally to stream from. Collaboration welcome if it goes ahead. Info to be posted when known...

AUTONOMOUS INFOPOINT AT ALLY PALLY: point for distribution of materials / sales of videos etc - Currently still under negotiation with ESF process.

OFFICIAL ESF MEDIA CENTRE: will be at allexandra palace. 25 computers and space for 50 laptops. Computers should run on open source / free software after efforts by media activists. accreditation available to community and independent media after lobbying by indy activists, but indy may have to issue letter / pass beforehand (NB we need to sort out a process for this). See http://www.fse-esf.org

It is still unknown if there will be any net-connected public access computers at the official ESF and Ally Pally, other than the official esf media centre that you'll have to be accredited to access.

Activities

* Setting up and running the main IMC, camden centre, other spaces, mobile units and infoppoints will require a lot of volunteers and co-operation before we even get down to the task of reporting or putting on or participating in events!

Reporting

* Reporting the ESF, the autonomous events, actions, and protests

    • Need reporting hotline dispatch numbers and all the usual trimmings
    • Rotas for dispatch and features required

* Audio / Radio Coverage

    • potential for lots of radio and audio coverage, needs co-ordinators
    • possible daily one hour slot on resonance FM 104.4 radio
    • see UkImcEsfRadio for some initial ideas

* Video Coverage

    • potential for streaming - who is into this?
    • who can co-ordinate video coverage?

Events and Workshops

* There are several days of events to develop at the camden centre in association with the MCCRN groups as well as rooms in a nearby venue for other workshops and events.

Film Screenings

* There are several spaces that will be showing films, who can co-ordinate?

Ideas For Other Activities

Potential stuff we could do in terms of actions during the ESF:

  • Hacklab
  • Links between Free Software people and activist types
  • Film screenings, maybe from: ImcUkCambridgeFilms
  • Linking different spaces via net / radio / wifi etc
  • Newspaper project, posters, subvertising + agit prop
  • Get people more aware of and involved in Indymedia or independent media activities, with a view towards funnelling energy into G8 coverage.
  • creative and action type ideas
  • Socialize the issues of privacy rather than making them private :), bring them out into the open, get the information out about these issues rather than having it be co-opted
  • Workshops/skillshares/discussions - ideas from the AktiviX II get together and Summer camp proposal include: preparing for the G8 next years, dispatch system, translation tools, criteria for topic sites and other new projects, outreach: how to help setting up new IMCs?, How to facilitate a meeting? (face-to-face, IRC), Registering domains: is there a safe way to deal with the informal hierachy between the domain owner, the techies and the rest? Setting up a system for a more coherent exchange and translation of videos, audio and video streaming, audio and video software, video editing, filming, feature and article writing / creative-writing, basic html, facilitation/moderation of face-to-face and online meetings, use of twiki and irc, pgp/gpg, learning imc-software technics and administration (i.e mir)

Technical Requirements

NB Currently mostly just dealing with Camden Centre

Computer Aid

Computer Aid were supplying almost everything we need.. See here. BUT NOT ANY MORE so please see ImcUkEsfCamdenComputers for up to date details

Setup and Install

NOT HAPPENING ANY MORE

Happening Sunday October 3rd and 10th @ 1pm @ Computer Aid, London (Holloway Rd - not far from Holloway Rd tube). All welcome! Zak working on software to install.

Other stuff

  • wireless stuff - Consume, free2air, Yossarian also has a hub.
  • 3 audio editing stations, sound cards, USB and microphone inputs - Windows or Mac?, LARC ?
  • audio editing software
  • Specialized video + audio streaming audio machines, provided by those doing it?
  • How do we connect the imc and other autonomous spaces?

Logsitics re accomodation

Homestay accomodation for visiting euro imc'istas will be prioritised above uk imc'istas who are requested to make arrangements with friends and contacts.

A request for people to act as hosts was sent to imc london list on 8th Sept - see HERE. We need to find a co-ordinator in London to take this on. If you can help or you need to request accomodation please contact planet-mail(at-no/spam)pop3.poptel.org.uk

There will be several large accomodation spaces for people participating in the autonomous spaces - see http://altspaces.net

If you are going to buy a ticket for the main ESF there is some free accomodation available but this is very limited and needs to be arranged through national mobilisations - see http://www.fse-esf.org

See also the Esf2004Visitors page for practial info for visitors.

Outreach and publicity

* Materials will be needed during the events:

    • Welcome to the IMC infosheet telling people about the spaces
    • General flyer with dispatch reporting numbers on it
    • Info from local IMC's
    • General Indymedia factsheet
    • Stuff to sell - videos, VCD's CDs DVDs etc Badges Tee-shirts etc etc

What Who When
network call-out to invite people to participate several written and sent on going
call-out to European IMCs London to draft on going

Contacting Hub Project - done.

First Mail sent 25th May 04 - see here

Local Liaisons

It would be great if one person from each local IMC could take on the role of being a local liaison for their collective. Making sure comms get down to the local email lists and feeding back. Below is a table to clearly set out who local liaisons will be, roughly how many people will come, and what local imc's can help with:

Local IMC Liaison Email How many coming Help offered
Birmingham Alex phunkeemunkee@gmxSTOPSPAM.net unknown at mo unknown at mo
Bristol
Cambridge Brett levin@riseupSTOPSPAM.net prob. 4-6 bar? tech set up/support

West Country

NB even if people cannot make it to london, they can still help out on irc working on features and dispatch systems etc

NB individuals should still fill out their details on the Esf2004Visitors page so we have a better idea of the numbers needing accomodation and who can help with what etc.

Media Culture and Communication Rights Network

  • a grouping trying to set up autonomous parallel events around the ESF
  • 1 day forum before the ESF starts (European Forum on Communication Rights)
  • will have some sessions within, some outside esf
  • outreach to global communications rights movements

Dispatch and reporter allocation

Not sure how to title this section, basically this refers to the need to organise ourselves around the various spaces and events taking place and ensure that people are aware of what there is going on that might be good to cover and whether somebody has taken it on. For this purpose a wiki page is available to 'sign up' to spaces or events at diferent times - or to post information about events that would be good to cover. Additionally, there will be a noticeboard at the Camden Centre and other media production spaces on which people will each day be able to see at a glance what is going on and sign up if they like. This info will be syncronised with the wiki (in theory).

See ImcUkEsfDispatch
