IMC UK Languages

Mir supports unicode / utf-8 and can therefore be used to create web pages in any language.

Issues

Setting up a new language on the UK site involves more than someone willing to do some translations, it is more akin to setting up a new regional site, some issues to be considered:

  • Translation of templates - users should not have to post using a form in english
  • Translation of static documents - users should not be expected to read documents like the editorial guidelines in english
  • Features and newswire - there would probably need to be at least one list per language for the language specific collective to sort out cleaning the newswire, features etc

Languages

There are two letter and three letter languages codes use a two letter one if it is available (note that the lanugage codes are different from the country ones - uk is a county code for the UK but also a language code for Ukranian).

  • ImcUkAr? - Arabic
  • ImcUkBn? - Bengali
  • ImcUkFa? - Farsi
  • ImcUkUr? - Urdu

Templates

The UK templates are hosted on codecoop.

Detailed technical documentation is probably best done on another page, like UkI18n?.
