Tutorial for Moderators on Imc Uk

This twiki explains how to create a feature, and how to clean the newswire.

Creating a Feature

These instructions take the creation of a regional feature for the Cambridge Imc page as an example (articletype "regionalfeature"). You can also use them to create other types of articles: For a feature on the Uk startpage select articletype "feature", for a special feature that sticks to the top of the middlecolumn select articletype "startpagespecial" for the uk startpage or articletype "topicspecial" for a regional imc site. Please note: Every article can only have ONE article type. This means that you can't create an article which shows as a special feature on the Uk page and also as an ordinary feature on a regional imc page.

Login is at http://uk.indymedia.de/uk/servlet/Mir

If you have a image you want to show in your feature go FIRST to APPENDIX B in this document.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Go to the starting page of the Indymedia administration either using your login and password or by clicking on start (top right corner) if you are already logged in the system.
  2. click on new article (in ADD/EDIT)
  3. Make sure that
    • your article type is regional feature,
    • topic: eg Cambridge (can be more) and
    • you choose published (top right corner). Do NOT click on insert YET)
  4. fill the remaining fields (all fields do not have to be completed). Date is automatically done for you.
  5. if your entry is NOT a HTML document and has NOT an image, go to step 7.
  6. if your entry IS a HTML document and image : click on HTML and past you html code in abstract and/or content. Only the code in between < body > and < /body > need to be used. Use paragraph tags < p> < /p> around text not enclosed by heading tags ( eg < H1> < /H1> ) or text will sit against edge of article box. To create an html document see APPENDIX A. Please note: What you write in the field will appear on the frontpage. This should be rather short and contain some links. What you write in the field will appear when the users clicks on "Read more".
  7. when you filled up all the field, click on insert and go to start again (step 1).
  8. on the start page click on generate all new (in GENERATE MANUALLY) and you need to wait couple of second to see the actual doc appearing on the indymedia public web site (you see you reload the site if you already visited it). If it does not apprear after a while, something went wrong. You can check the status of your loading by going to start (step 1) and ADVANCE_PAGE (in GENERATE MANUALLY)

If you need to go back and change something:

  • go to start (step 1)
  • click on REGIONAL FEATURE (in LIST)
  • Locate your article and click on EDIT.
  • change whatever you need to change
  • click on SAVE
  • go to start (step 1)
  • perform step 8 again.

APPENDIX A: Adding Pictures in Features from Indymedia Database

you will want to create a HTML document and put a in picture. There are two ways of doing this: you can insert the image in the page automatically using Mir's image upload system, or if you want a bit more control you can use Composer in Mozilla to write HTML code. You should usually always use the automatic way , because it gives a thumbnail which takes less memory and the webpage is quicker to download for the readers. But if you still want to add a picture manually, to do so,

  • open a composer window (on mozilla : file - new - composer)
  • choose NORMAL (bottom of your composer). that should be the default
  • write your test .... ....
  • if you want to include an image go to image and paste you image location (this image should be in Indymedia database see APPENDIX B for uploading an image and get the image location)
  • if you have a link : highlight the test to hyperlink and press link. You will need to enter the webpage location (ex : http://paris.indymedia.org/).
  • go from NORMAL to SOURCE. you should now see the source code of your text. Copy the code from < body > to < /body > (the < body > excluded).
  • paste the source code into the field Abstract or content in step [6].

APPENDIX B: Uploading pictures to Indymedia Database

Uploading images to Indymedia Database (media folders) without publishing to the newswire.

  • go to START (see step [1]). click on PICTURES (in MEDIA)
  • click on [+]ADD
  • fill the necesary fields and make sure you do NOT check published. The media folder for pictures is Cambridge_test, select that. If you picture is on your desktop, go to browse and find your picture. click now on insert
  • your picture should appear in ICON. Right-click and hold on this picture and ask to copy image location.
  • Keep this image location somewhere, you'll need it to paste into your html code later on.

Newswire Cleaning

Say you want to hide a wire article whose url is, https://publish.indymedia.org.uk/en/2003/07/273576.html

Go to admin start page: http://uk.indymedia.de/uk/servlet/Mir

you have just logged in and you see three columns. The article id no. is 273576, so in the middle column, you enter this number in the box where it says 'open article #' and you click on '>'. It takes you to the article, admin side.

On the top left of your screen, click on the link that says 'hide'. Then click on 'save', at right top or right botton. (patience is a virtue)

Then you are taken back to the start page. At the botton of the middle column, in the box that says 'Generate Manually', click on the link 'generate all new'.

Done. This was one way, the fastest if you have seen a posting from the wire or if some one posted a petition to hide in the features list.

Another way is checking the wire from the admin side itself. From the admin start page, click, on the left column, on 'newswire'. Then you have a list of all newswire articles. It is useful to 'right click' (or click for a long time, on a mac) on 'preview' to see the content on a new window or tab. If an article is for hiding, click on the down arrow and click on 'hide'. You can hide a few and then click on 'save', at right top or right button. Then click on 'start' to go to start page and generate all new.

Done.
