Moderation for IMC UK on Mir

"Moderation" means "cleaning the newswire", promoting or demoting articles between various article-types, creating and changing features/static pages. These tasks can be done through the admin 'start page'. There have been many huge discussions about what to moderate, some of which have been documented on the UkModerationDiscussion page. Current guidlines can be found at UkModeration, however, there is still huge debate and the best advice is probably that one should be prepared to _un_hide stuff if neccessary.

Resizing images

Until we have an automatic resizing script in our Mir installation, the following is the recommended method for resizing large images:

  1. Inform irc that you are about to do this, otherwise somebody else might decide to do it and you'll end up duplicating work.
  2. Download the images from the published article, putting them all into one single empty directory and making a note of any captions the images may have.
  3. Run mogrify -resize 550 * in the images directory
  4. Log into Mir admin and edit the post
  5. Click upload image, and upload all the resized images, ensuring that published is ticked. Set the title to the original captions if there were any.
  6. Go back to the article, and click edit next to each original image
  7. untick published then hit save for each original image.

After following this, the original images will be left in admin but unpublished, should anybody need them. The published images however will all be a sensible size. Note that step 3 requires you to have imagemagick installed, which in Debian or Ubuntu is as simple as doing "aptitude install imagemagick". On other operating systems you may have other methods of resizing images.
