58 static pages that need manual editing and uploading

Overview

This page lists all hand-coded middle columns of the old imc-uk site. As they were hand-coded, they couldn't be imported with the rest of the database and need transferring into Mir manually (sigh). Some of these middle columns consist of archives (like the "Pre-cgi UK Feature Archives" and most "World Features"), others like the "Major Reports" are collating information about specific events or actions. This twiki page is supposed to be the central place where we keep track of what has been done and what still needs doing.

What needs to be done?

Font colour and 'blue box' correction

All the pages below use coloured fonts that are difficult to read on the new site - thus all font colour tags need to be deleted. And shouldn't the sub-head and date of the blue box in plain text? Not sure...

Correct links to url's of the old site

A lot of relative and absolute links lead back to the old active-site and need to be changed to the url they now have in mir. The way mir handles files is that they will be sorted into directories depending on the month it was posted. For example, the Shannon war-port protest was uploaded in April 2003 and had the id number 63497 in stallman. Mir handles that as follows: http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/2003/04/63497.html

so the quickest way to change to the new url is to copy the first part of the mir-url [http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/2003/04/] over that old stallman-url [http://uk.indymedia.org/front.php3?article_id=]. then just glue a [.html] behind the number and the url should work straight away. if the static page you're working on is dated from January 2001 then use [http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/2001/01/]...

If this doesn't work then check in in the mir admin interface: any story's mir-url can be found by typing in the number of the webcast url in the "open article #" box. For example if you have an 'old' url like you'd use the article number "72551" in that url and copy it into the "open article #" box in admin. you then will be presented with the option to edit the article, but click on the preview button on top and you'll be seeing the story converted in the new site.

if you encounter a id number that CANNOT be found in admin your alarm bells should ring. Please leave a note in the twiki workspace like in UkWorld0306#Barcelona_Against_The_War_Protes

The url http://uk.indymedia.org should soon be switched over to lead to the new mir site. If you still want to access the old site then use the url http://stallman.indymedia.org/uk/ - all links leading to the old site below use this url already.

Check external links

External links can go missing and could need some checking as well; and links relative to the page itself like "Back to main page" or "Top of this page" need to be taken out. If an external link is broken it may make sense to comment it out - you can do that like this:

Check pictures

You will see a weird image icon if a picture is missing. All but a few images will be pointed to in this format:
http://images.indymedia.org/imc/uk/images/image.jpg
in nearly all case you can replace "picture.jpg" with the filename you're missing and the picture should be fine. Still, there are missing pictures from the period of January to April 03 when picture uploads to images.indymedia were failing and media was manually uploaded into a stallman directory. All this media was imported into mir but can only be found in a format like
http://www.indymedia.org.uk/icon/2003/09/277446.jpg

Which is a bit of a detective job to do. So if you can't find a picture just comment it out - you can do that like this:

if you do this please leave a note in the twiki workspace saying that you did so, so that someone else can go hunting if required. For an example of how to do this see UkWorld0306

Uploading the cleaned out text into the Mir-site

When the text is cleaned out, the features need to be uploaded into Mir. It will make sense to upload some "Major Reports" as a single story but most of the archives are a collection of 'intros' that have different dates - meaning that it will make sense to upload any of these in their own story even if it's just a short intro in the abstract. With any upload please make sure you type in the old date ( plus 1 day eg 2003-09-27 to be converted to time stamp 2003-09-26 23:00 due to BST/GMT bug ) in the date field and tick the appropriate regional or action box.

This ideally should be done via the mir admin interface but can as well be done by posting it into the wire - but someone with admin should then be notified to change the newswire posting into a feature and tick the appropriate regional or action box. Then if you have admin make a 'regional feature' which is also a topic / action feature, as well as ticking html box.

Make your changes live

To produce your changes you need to enqueue in the advanced admin page:
1) articles --> changed (and media --> new if you uploaded for example a new picture)
2) regionalfeaturearchive --> quickupdate
3) synchronization --> run

Keep this twiki up to date

Whatever you do - cleaning fonts, correcting url's or uploading, please leave a comment on top of the element or page so that your work is not duplicated. If you have cleaned out and uploaded a story then delete all but the headline and add a comment saying "story is uploaded at http://indymedia.org.uk/en/200x/xx/xxxxx.html". Static Index on new site

As most of pages under http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/actions/ do not have any direct links from front page, a [UkMirStaticPageHOWTO][static page] which can be found at http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/static/archive.html will index them, how this page is arranged is yet to be determined, feel free to help it evolve.

The lists below have a link to the original old middle columns on the left, in the middle a link to the rough text that needs to be edited. These links in the middle lead to a twiki page that should be seen as a 'workspace' - if you want to help out please edit in there. On the right is a coloured list of the status of work on each page - if coloured in red, the work still has to be done, if coloured in green it's been done.
