Para quienes no saben irc significa Internet Relay Chat, lo que para indymedia consiste en salones de chat que tenemos en nuestro servidor. Tú puedes visitar estos salones de charla con programas que puedes obtener gratis desde internet, o incluso usando la web. Esto tiene un potencial enorme. Chatear con una persona es un nivel comunicacional totalmente distinto que el e-mail, mucho más dinámico.

IRC es un servicio interactivo en internet que te permite hablar con un grupo, o dindividuos de todo el mundo de forma casi totalmente instantánea. El grupo IMC-tech se reúne en IRC porque somos un grupo de Seattle, Australia, London, Boston, por nombrar unos pocos. Para tener conferencias por teléfono cada semana sería mucho dinero. A. Probably the easiest way to attend is use your web browser and visit the IMC IRC website:

This will allow you to connect through your browser without having to install any software.
Otherwise, just like you need a web browser to access the World Wide Web, people usually use an IRC client installed on their computer to connect to an IRC server. Once you have downloaded and installed an IRC client you can log on to the IRC server and begin.

Como empezar
1. Necesitas concertarte al servidor correcto. IRC tiene una red por defecto llamada EFnet, este es un lugar donde cientos de miles de personas se conectan para chatear. Nosotros decidimos mantenernos un poco distantes de todas estas personas para miniminzar los problemas con algunas personas que se dedican a molestar (creanme, ocurre todo el tiempo en EFnet). Entonces cuando ejecutes tu cliente de IRC necesitarás conectarlo a:

Como lo haces dependerá de tu cliente, en la mayoría de ellos debes escribir:
/server irc.indymedia.org
y esto es todo.
2. Necesitas escoger un nickname. Esto es simple:
/nick nickname
solo una persona puede tener un nickname, entonces si tú te llamas josh quizás quieras tener el nickname josh, pero si escribes '/nick josh' puede que te diga que alguien ya ocupa ese nickname y que debes elegir otro. Solo elige algo distinto, "Joshua" u otra cosa. Frecuentemente se usan apodos en vez del nombre real, sé creativo.
3. Encuentra donde la reunión se realizará.
A ti probablemento te dijeron que la reunión es a las 7pm en #indymedia. Un canal es una palabra con el símbolo # al principio. Si te dijeron que se encontrarían en #indymedia, ese es el nombre del canal, nos encontraremos en el canal #indymedia. Para entrar a ese canal probablemente tendrás que escribir: '/join #indymedia' algunas veces tendrás que escribir: '/channel #indymedia' Now if you type, you will see what you type begin to appear at the bottom of the screen, along with what everyone else is typing. You might feel a little lost at first, since you are coming in the middle of a conversation that is already in progress,
maybe several conversations. Just sit back and listen for a bit, you'll soon figure out what is being talked about. If not, ask the facilitator in a private message what the current agenda item is.
Q. ¿Cómo mando un mensaje privado?
Tu puedes tener conversaciones privadas al mismo tiempo que le hablas con todos. De hecho es una buena idea mantener conversaciones privadas para reducir el alboroto que todo el resto debe leer. Igual que en una reunión normal, si tienes algo que decir a una persona que no necesitas decir al grupo, se lo dices en la oreja para no interrumpir la reunión. Si quisieras enviarle a juan un mensaje privado, deberías escribir: '/msg juan solo quería decir hola, terminé de programar mi sitio, míralo cuando puedas'
Topics
Los tipics en los canales pueden cambiar frecuentemente. Si estás en una reunión, el/la moderador/a debe cambiar el topic del canal a media que los temas de la agenda van cambiando, así cuando alguien entre al canal pueda entender rápidamente de qué se está discutiendo..
Como salir de IRC
Simplemente escribe: '/quit' tu debes poner antes de todos los comandos un slash (/) o simplemente dirás la palabra en el canal.
