Hierarchical Structure

Introduction

A hierarchical structure (tree structure) consists of branches where each element (except the uppermost and downmost) relates to at least one sub element and a single parent element. The most common example is probably a family tree.

On the lowest level of each branch, there should be a seperation between: A) Lexicons, which will have to be created and then posted to the TT for translation into other languages, and B) Links to info relating to each of those topics, which would be added as we go along.

Discussion

report:
  • Add "technology" category (already included above)

deyanira:
  • More flexible categorization needed: Many glossaries do not fit into continental categories or are the same for some or all continents (agriculture & breeding, biotechnology, legal terms, international trade)
  • Add category for geo-focused stuff
  • Problem: "Food aid in Africa" should be listed under "food", "politics" or "society", than (below that) "Africa". Or maybe both directions.

AlsteR:
  • As deyanira already basically points out, more relations than provided by a hierarchical structure are needed.
  • Recommends different structuring scheme

LinksRhein:
  • If you decide yourselves for a hierarchical structure i recommend the categories or classifications of one of the well know library thesauries like Library of Congress Classification (LCC) or Dewey Decimal Classification(DDC). You could restrict yourselves for example to the top 3 or 5 hierarchy levels (you can also find them translated sometimes: e.g. the DDC top 5 levels are translated to German already)
  • Thesauries (German) are more than just a hierarchical structure. They have the following relations between the terms:
    • broader term
    • narrower terms
    • related terms
    • synonym terms ("use" and "used for")
