History of Oscailt

Version 1.0
This set of simple scripts soon became a limiting factor and the tech team set to work to find a proper replacement. After examining various options that were being used elsewhere in the network (dada, mir, active) we came to the conclusion that none of them met our requirements. Hence the tech team set to work at building the first version of oscailt. It was finally released on the Irish site on Jun 18 2003 to instant acclaim from the growing and vibrant community that the website had built up in the 18 months since its inception. The post announcing the original release of Oscailt is archived here:
http://www.indymedia.ie/newswire.php?story_id=60069 The major innovations in that code were 4 dimensions of categorisation (type, topic, region, language), filtering on all these topics, localisation of pages based on these topics and a search engine. This basic 4 dimensional structure has stood the test of time and it remains the core around which the organisation of oscailt content is arranged.
Version 1.01
Little more than a month after the initial release, version 1.01 followed suit. This added the much needed syndication facility to the codebase, both push and pull, allowing indymedia ireland to syndicate news to and from the global network. The announcement of this release is archived here:
