hi everyone,
The proposal below has now passed both new-imc and imc-process
deadlines without any further comment. So it's accepted by the
network. Tech people (or others) supporting the cancun WTO site can
make the splash page and get the domain set up to point to the splash
page.
***www-features*** Please correct the error on the feature
GLOBAL: WTO MEDIA/CULTURE Sep 3 2003
Fair Trade instead of WTO
No WTO a Go-Go
The error is the words "Cancun Indymedia" - but Cancun Indymedia does
not exist!!!
These words wrongly mislead the reader into thinking that a local,
self-sustaining indymedia collective exists in Cancun. The reality
is that many activists from outside of Cancun are converging on the
city but that in a few months time nearly all will have left the city.
These activists prepared an open publishing web site, but it is not the
site of a local indymedia collective.
A similar thing happened in Prague and it took a couple of years
before a real local group took over, plus this required unncessary
intervention from the network which had to de facto decide that no
local group existed.
i suggest a more meaningful phrase such as
"Cancun WTO open publishing site"
or
"Cancun visitors' indymedia site"
or
think up something else which is correct and not misleading.
If there is any pressure to include direct links to
"cancun.indymedia.org" in future features over the next few weeks,
PLEASE check that the link goes to a splash page as per the consensed
on proposal below.
The point is to avoid people being disappointed or confused in 6
months' time when it becomes obvious that there is no local group
autonomously managing the site.
Alternatively, if visitors to Cancun have the *correct* information,
they might actually be encouraged to help locals really organise a local
collective - if they misleadingly think that the collective already
exists, everyone will be confused.
Thanks,
boud (new-imc and IMC PL volunteer)
