***NEXT IRC MEETINGS: 1 Feb, 16:00 GMT and 22 Feb, 16:00 GMT
irc.indymedia.org #features
IRC meeting 1/11
agenda:
o translations
o responsibility for comments
o syndication
o design
+ translations
this issue was discussed at great length and composed the majority of
the meeting
inital opinions were diverse: some felt that features needed only to be
in their local language before posting
others felt every feature should be at minimum translated into english,
english AND spanish, or english OR spanish prior to posting
concerns were raised about whether multiple languages appearing on the
same page might make the site confusing or unintelligible
reference made to ftaaimc and a-infos, where user selects preferred
language
concerns about whether translation requirements might slow down posting
process
suggestion made for requiring all features to at least be translated
into spanish before posting, with the argument that spanish features
will be translated into english quickly
consensus was reached on the following proposal:
1) turning the translation option for articles on now.
2) trying to get spanish and local translations for every feature after it
is posted for a trial period of 4 weeks.
3) engaging translations.indy to actually get those translations.
4) evaluate how things are going in 4 to 6 weeks
5) getting a translation for all buttons and texts on www.indy into
spanish and maybe other relevant language, so that the page can actually
displayed in those languages
6) outreach to get more latin american imcs in www-features and to mail
features to local IMCs for additional remarks and translation
+ responsibility for comments on features
suggestion was made to follow similar guidelines as those posted by max
(michigan-imc) in an earlier email
comments that are intentionally misleading, false, or seriously
offensive could be removed
+ syndication
tabled until next meeting
+ design issues
rabble reported on design issues
suggested all pages should be css (cascading style sheets) or xhtml
(extended-html)
feels logo is too busy
suggested following requirements for site: xhtml, css, readable,
language links, center column and righthand column, and place for
upcoming events
feels we should solicit more designs and put them up for vote
and suggested removing events section, arguing it is a hangover from
former times (summit-hopping, etc.) and that indymedia is now a more
daily news source
discussion to be continued on www-migrations
+ blackbeard proposed another meeting to discuss philosophical issues
surrounding role of features collective: i.e., should we compose original
features or strictly operate as syndication of local imcs.
those present consensed to discuss in separate meeting and to send out
thoughts beforehand to features list
