The Manila Independent Media Center Collective is an autonomous group of grassroots media activists committed in using media production and distribution as a tool for promoting social, environmental and economic justice in the local communities of Manila and the Philippines in general. It is our goal to further empower the marginalized Filipino people in their local communities, who are under-represented in corporate media production and content, and to illuminate and analyze local, national and global issues that impact the ecosystem, grass roots communities and individuals. We seek to generate alternatives to the biases inherent in the corporate mainstream media controlled by profit, and to identify and create positive models for a sustainable and equitable society.
HISTORY OF Manila IMC
In the beginning was the relentless numerous experiences of oppressed classes in the poor communities of Manila who were fighting for their lives. These experiences composes the stories of poor people that Philippine corporate mass media doesn't care to tell about, unless it has something to do with the sensational such as murder, robbery, homicide and drugs. But to reveal the truth of poverty's root cause can never be a duty for corporate media to take the task.
From this situation came the emergence of Manila Independent Media Center. The aim is to establish an alternative media project wherein the marginalized people themselves can now directly speak for their own stories of truth (through open web publishing) and tell the whole world about their plight and struggle for a better society. Because it is only through the empowerment of the grass roots (without a need for authority and leadership) in reclaiming history is the only way for the oppressed classes to attain the need for a sustainable and equitable society, an ultimate interest that is sympathetic to Manila IMC's cause.
Manila IMC is the embodiment of poor people in every poverty stricken community who starts to act for themselves, grabbing the microphone that mainstream media has imposed authority for a long time.
Manila Independent Media Center Collective was formally organized in July 22, 2003 after the
ImcNantesPrinciples of Unity was consensually agreed by the diverse autonomous individuals of the working group. The collective was organized at the outskirts of Manila- the place where communities suffers urban militarization and everyday State violence.
Using only our analog second hand cameras, pre-paid internet cards, second hand personal computers and a passion for telling the truth of struggles and experiences of the oppressed people in various communities of Manila and the Philippines on the surface of the worlwide web.
