Oceania Video Newsreal

From the forests of Tasmania to the factories of Jakarta: Oceania Indymedia Newsreal 2 compiles short, critical documentaries focussing on social and environmental issues in the Asia-Pacific region. Bringing together stories from independent producers and community media collectives the Oceania Newsreal is distributed on VCD and online via the oceania.indymedia.org website.

Launched at Newcastle Electro-fringe in October 2004 the newsreal aims to encourage content and skills sharing between regional Independent Media Centres and video collectives, community TV and independent video producers. Likewise the online component allows works to be distributed easily across the globe and for people to download and screen them in their local area.

The film is distributed using the creative commons license and is free to distribute for non-commercial purposes.

Edition 2

Beyond the Factory Walls
Beyond the Factory Walls is a digital video production and multimedia theatre collaboration between an Australian community television group, Actively Radical Television (ARTV) from Sydney and a Jakarta based Factory Workers' theatre company, Teater Buruh Indonesia (TBI - Indonesian Workers Theatre).

Through the Wire
In March 2002, detainees of Australia's Woomera detention centre staged a mass breakout in a spontaneous and desperate bid for freedom. Aided by hundreds of committed social activists protesting Australia's treatment of asylum seekers in mandatory detention, the breakout captured the attention and interest of human rights groups around the globe.

Happy Birthday Timor Leste
A critical look at the anniversary of East Timor's independence and the still dire state of many of its people. The film also looks at the under handed dealings of the Australian government in attempting to annex oil supplies from East Timor in the Timor Sea.

Tasmania's Forests: A Global Treasure, a National Responsibility
Tasmania is globally renowned for its pristine wilderness. But the Tasmanian community is divided by the logging of oldgrowth forests for woodchips. Set to a soundtrack by The John Butler Trio, this short film documents the logging practices and the subsequent community protests within Tasmania.

State of Emergency
In May 2004 over 500 people attended a conference for four days in a reclaimed warehouse in inner city Melbourne. State of Emergency was a series of workshops, forums, parties and film screenings that attempted to come to grips with the new forms of state power, war and neo-liberalism that pervade everyday life.

Whose News?
Whose News? is a half-hour documentary produced by Auckland Indymedia which looks at who owns New Zealand's major media outlets and why we should be worried about it. The New Zealand mediascape is one of the most commercialised media markets in the world with a high concentration of ownership in the hands of just a few overseas companies: Canwest, ANM, Fairfax and INL. Whose News? looks at what this pattern of media ownership means for our democracy and what we can do about it.
