Chi siamo (Mission Statement)

Indymedia Roma \xE8 una rete di individui e reti di mediattivisti, che offre una copertura informativa dal basso, non corporativa e non commerciale di questioni sociali e politiche che non trovano spazio sui media mainstream. Indymedia Roma crede in una trasformazione radicale della societ\xE0 fondata sulla partecipazione e sulla diffusione di visioni alternative a quelle ufficialmente ed univocamente determinate e diffuse, allo scopo di contribuire all'elaborazione di modelli positivi per una societ\xE0 pi\xF9 giusta, equa e sostenibile.

Il nodo romano fa parte del network di Indymedia: nato per esigenze di copertura mediatica di un evento che i media rischiavano di deformare, le proteste di Seattle contro il WTO, Indymedia ha reso possibile - anche grazie a internet - la creazione di mass media dal basso, autogestiti, non-profit e indipendenti dai media istituzionali e commerciali, rappresentando una rottura nel mediascape modiale. La rete globale di Indymedia racchiude ormai centinaia di esperienze di condivisione di media. Indymedia Roma fa parte di questa rete.

Indymedia deve la sua forza mediatica ad una piattaforma web flessibile e user-friendly, ad un database completamente automatizzato, a potenti server per lo streming audio-video, ad un flusso di news sempre aggiornato. Chiunque puo' caricare ed editare registrazioni audio e video, immagini, articoli, news, comunicati.

Le attiviste e gli attivisti non intendono delegare a media corporativi assoggettati ai poteri forti della politica e dell'economia, il compito della comunicazione, risorsa fondamentale nella lotta per una societ\xE0 pi\xF9 giusta e libera. Indymedia fa perci\xF2 della pubblicazione aperta e della partecipazione libera, il suo principio di base e nello stesso tempo il suo punto di forza. Lo scopo \xE8 quello di dare voce alle ralt\xE0 ed alle lotte che non trovano spazio nei media mainstream offrendogli un luogo di visibilit\xE0 e confronto diretto e non mediato.

La precedente esperienza che vedeva in Roma un nodo di Indymedia Italia formatosi nel 2001, ha cercato di raccontare dal basso e senza discriminazioni di area o fazione, quello che \xE8 accaduto nella nostra citt\xE0 e nostra regione, dalle battaglie per il diritto all'abitare, alle lotte antifasciste, ai conflitti metropolitani, collaborando con altre esperienze di mediattivismo ed informazione indipendente come radio comunitarie e hacklab ed improntando il nostro "fare comunicazione" sul motto "Become your Media".

Per partecipare ad Indymedia Roma \xE8 necessario iscriversi alla mailing list e prendere parte agli incontri pubblici e aperti, periodicamente pubblicizzati attraverso il sito. Le assemblee sono il luogo principale in cui si prendono le decisioni attraverso il metodo del consenso, un procedimento che consente di trovare una sintesi tra la diverse posizioni in maniera non coercitiva e cooperativa, nel rispetto delle diversit\xE0 ideologiche e di genere, per espandere e sviluppare le relazioni in maniera non gerarchica, autonoma e solidale. Le assemblee sono anche l'opportunit\xE0 di condivisione del metodo e della filosofia di Indymedia, e rappresentano lo strumento principale per allargare la partecipazione al progetto.

Gli admin si occupano della gestione del sito sollecitando la partecipazione attiva di tutte e tutti: gli admin non sono altro che dei facilitatori del sito, che, attraverso la loro attivit\xE0, permettono che esso sia sempre fruibile da tutti e tutte. L'elaborazione di contenuti che si ha sulla lista di coordinamento di Indymedia Roma \xE8 totalmente aperta e chiunque pu\xF2 contribuirvi. Indymedia Roma sta studiando metodi e procedure per diminuire il gap tra amministratori del sito e utenti, nella gestione e nel mantenimento del progetto.

La richiesta per diventare admin deve essere fatta alla lista di coordinamento del nodo locale ed \xE8 necessario:

1. aver dimestichezza con la pubblicazione aperta e con il funzionamento del sito
2. partecipare agli incontri periodici di Indymedia Roma ed essere iscritto alla lista di coordinamento
3. condividere la policy e la modalit\xE0 di coordinamento che Indymedia Roma ha scelto di darsi, ben sapendo che esse possono essere messe in discussione in ogni momento
4. aver seguito un workshop tecnico sul funzionamento del sito
5. avere la "fiducia" di una o pi\xF9 persone conosciute all'interno del network

Criteri di adesione

a. Condividere lo spirito del Manifesto del NIMC e dei Principi di Unit\xE0.

Indymedia Roma si impegna a diffondere e sostenere la NIMC nei metodo e nei principi, che condivide pienamente e profondamente. Crede che la partecipazione diffusa ed eterogenea di individui e collettivi, sia nella rete NIMC che a livello locale, rappresenti uno dei mezzi e dei metodi di presa di coscienza determinante nella trasformazione della societa'. Indymedia Roma si impegna ad essere un'entita' aperta e partecipata in maniera non gerarchica, indipendente, autoorganizzata e solidale. Attraverso la partecipazione e la pluralita' delle voci che la compongono, Indymedia Roma cerchera' di raccontare la realta' dimenticata, tralasciata o travisata dai media ufficiali. Utilizzando l'open publishing come strumento di diffusione di informazione vogliamo offire uno spazio privilegiato ma non esclusivo all'espressione delle comunita' locali. Riteniamo il metodo del consenso uno strumento fondante delle prese di decisione interne alla comunita', tuttavia la sua puntuale applicazione, almeno in Italia, e' ancora una grande scommessa. Indymedia Roma non ha la pretesa di raccontare i fatti in maniera oggettiva ma ritiene che l'oggettivita' sia piu' della somma delle narrazioni soggettive dei partecipanti.

b. Essere impegnati in una partecipazione abbastanza rilevante da poter gestire un IMC funzionante

Indymedia Roma e' formata da attivist* di diversa natura, alcun* gia' presenti ed attiv* in Indymedia Italia e di nuovi. Il luogo principale di discussione e' la mailing-list che conta in questo momento 94 persone iscritte. Roma e' una citta' ricca di avvenimenti che necessitano di maggiore visibilita', in questo contesto spingiamo le persone e i collettivi attivi nei piu' diversi ambiti a costruire direttamente le notizie, l'informazione e le attivita' che svolgono. Indymedia Roma non vuole essere l'agenzia di stampa dell'antagonismo romano. Tra i partecipanti alla lista di discussione ci sono persone con competenze diverse che si impegnano a condividere in maniera da non monopolizzare nessun ambito della gestione di un IMC funzionante.

c. Svolgere meeting aperti e pubblici (non \xE8 possibile che un gruppo possieda una “propriet\xE0” in esclusiva di un IMC)

Fin dalla sua nascita all'interno di Indymedia Italia, Indymedia Roma ha svolto meeting di discussione e workshop informativi su come gestire l'IMC e su come parteciparvi. Tutti questi meeting si sono svolti in luoghi pubblici come centri sociali e pubblicizzati sia sul sito che sulla mailing list. Riteniamo che in questo momento di rinascita questi incontri vadano potenziati e diffusi capillarmente sul territorio in modo da aumentare il contatto creativo - fondamentale e positivo - e la partecipazione attiva delle comunita' locali.

d. Lavorare in direzione dello sviluppo di un Manifesto locale o di una Dichiarazione di Intenti. \xC8 possibile adottare o servirsi occasionalmente del Manifesto del Network

e. Predisporre e pubblicare una policy editoriale che sia sviluppata e attuata attraverso un processo democratico ed in piena trasparenza.

Indymedia Roma fa riferimento alla policy http://docs.indymedia.org/view/Local/ImcRoma#Policy, determinata attraverso un processo collettivo, democratico e trasparente.

f. Accettare di utilizzare l’Open Publishing secondo quanto stabilito nella Policy editoriale del NIMC

Come specificato nel punto a, riteniamo l'open publishing lo strumento basilare del fare informazione in maniera il piu' possibile aperta, orizzontale e partecipativa. Riteniamo che la forza dell'IMC si mostri nella sua capacita' di fornire una lettura polimorfa e un attribuzione di senso ai fatti della realta' complessa, permessa dall'utilizzo dell'open publishing da parte della comunita' partecipante.

g. Adottare una policy di tipo decisionale che sia allineata con i principi del consenso, tra cui process trasparenti e basati sull’uguaglianza

Le modalit\xE0 decisionali adottate e predilette da Indymedia Roma si fondano sulla discussione collettiva di ciascuna scelta, rispetto alla quale ognuno pu\xF2 esprimersi. La policy adottata \xE8 stata definita dopo un processo di analisi critica che evolve secondo il principio del consenso, sia in assemblee dove \xE8 incoraggiata la partecipazione attiva di tutt*, sia attraverso la pubblicazione dei temi discussi in mailing list ed in una pagina wiki dove la formulazione e l'edizione dei documenti saranno possibili a ciascuno.

h. Disporre di uno o pi\xF9 portavoce che volontariamente e adeguatamente partecipino al process decisionale globale e ai meeting come rappresentanti/liaison a rotazione, che siano consapevoli delle responsabilit\xE0 derivanti da tale ruolo

La scelta di dividere Indymedia Italia in nodi decentralizzati e' frutto del ragionamento che la partecipazione alla vita del network globale debba passare da piu' persone rispetto al passato. Ogni nodo e' stato cosi costretto a interfacciarsi con liste internazionali per richiedere la propria adesione. Indymedia Roma non sara' da meno e si impegna a partecipare attraverso persone sempre diverse allo sviluppo della rete globale. In occasione dei meeting globali, chi interverr\xE0 per Indymedia Roma si far\xE0 portavoce di posizioni condivise dal nodo. Al momento il nostro unico portavoce e' ameba00x che e' iscritto alle liste new-imc e imc-process.

i. Prendere parte ai principali Metodi di comunicazione del Network IMC che siano nell’interesse della salute e della vitalit\xE0 del Network e che contribuiscano al lavoro di IMC. Assicurarsi che almeno una persona delvostro IMC locale partecipi in qualsiasi momento alla lista IMC Communication [ http://lists.indymedia.org/mailman/listinfo/imc-communication]

In questo momento nessuno e' iscritto a imc-communication, cercheremo a breve che una persona diversa da ameba00x si iscriva e faccia da liason tra le due liste.

* j. Non possedere alcuna affiliazione ufficiale a qualsiasi partito, stato o candidato politico pur permettendo a individui appartenenti alle organizzazione di cui sopra di partecipare alle attivit\xE0 del nodo*

La comunita' di partecipanti di Indymedia Roma si muove autonomamente da qualsiasi organizzazione politica istituzionale e statale

k.Le IMC non dovranno in alcun modo intraprendere iniziative di tipo commerciale for-profit.

Tutte le iniziative in cui Indymedia Roma sar\xE0 coinvolto saranno assolutamente no-profit. IMCN \xE8 impegnato nella decommercializzazione dell’informazione e si dissocer\xE0 da qualsiasi IMC locale che decida di diventare una corporation mediatica for-profit. Le uniche attivit\xE0 di reperimento fondi di Indymedia Roma, riguarderanno i costi del server di hosting e per le eventuali iniziative che Indymedia Roma far\xE0 sul territorio.

Policy

La policy, pur restando all'interno dei valori minimi comuni a tutto il network indymedia [ http://docs.indymedia.org/view/Global/DocumentsTranslation ], potr\xE0 sempre essere ridiscussa, qualora il gruppo lo ritenga necessario. Il gruppo di lavoro pu\xF2 allargarsi per cooptazione. I post che non rispettano la policy che segue non vengono eliminati ma vengono occultati, e restano quindi visibili e consultabili in una pagina diversa dalla home [http://indy-rm.ortiche.net/hidden]. Indymedia Roma non censura nulla.

Indymedia Roma \xE8 uno spazio a pubblicazione aperta (Open Publishing) poich\xE8 il newswire \xE8 il "fulcro" del progetto e il reale valore del progetto Indymedia, per renderlo il pi\xF9 fruibile possibile ed eliminare l'immondizia che un sistema aperto inevitabilmente porta con s\xE0 adottiamo queste linee guida (policy). Con la policy editoriale intendiamo un insieme di regole per gestire i messaggi (post) che saranno ritenuti inaccettabili ("fuori policy") e quindi l'insieme dei criteri che useremo per "nascondere" ("hiddare"), "modificare" ("editare") o "eliminare" ("cancellare") un post gi\xE0 pubblicato sul newswire. I criteri in base ai quali un messaggio (post) viene considerato "fuori policy" sono:

post fascisti - post sessisti - post di propaganda politica partitica o istituzionale- post di propaganda religiosa - post privi di contenuto informativo - post di spamming pubblicitario

Queste tipologie di messaggi vengono occultati, ma non eliminati.

Inoltre:

-I messaggi che contengono dati personali (nome, cognome, indirizzo, telefono, ecc..) vengono editati nascondendo con delle xxx solo questi dati; la scelta di tutelare l'anonimato e la privacy \xE8 una scelta fondamentale e politica.

-I messaggi doppi o vuoti vengono cancellati.

-Possono essere occultati o editati messaggi su richiesta di chi li ha pubblicati.

-I messaggi palesemente calunniatori, finalizzati al semplice insulto, infamia o alla minaccia personale vengono nascosti.

-I messaggi privi di alcun contenuto informativo vengono nascosti. Per nessun contenuto informativo intendiamo ad esempio, espressione di stati d'animo o giudizi che, per quanto condivisibili, non contengono alcun tipo di informazione ulteriore.

-Indymedia Roma non nasconde i messaggi in base alla loro veridicit\xE0 o meno, invitiamo gli/le utilizzator* di Indymedia a integrare le notizie affinch\xE8 chi legge possa capire il pi\xF9 possibile di ci\xF2 che \xE8 effettivamente avvenuto.

-In questa nuova versione di Indymedia Roma esiste la possibilit\xE0 per il/la lettore/lettrice di notificare alla lista di gestione la presenza di un post considerato fuori policy. Basta cliccare sul link "Notifica il post" , situato al di sotto del post e aggiungere un commento sul perche' lo si ritiene fuori policy. In questa maniera speriamo di sensibilizzare maggiormente chi legge a gestire assieme a noi il sito e a considerarlo uno strumento in mano alle persone che lo vogliono usare.

-Per quanto riguarda la pubblicazione di foto o materiale ritenuto pericoloso ai fini giudiziari osserveremo un principio di cautela cancellando i post ritenuti dannosi per rimetterli online solo quando, in base ad una successiva discussione in lista, sar\xE0 accertata la loro non-pericolosit\xE0, tenendo conto anche delle richieste dei vari gruppi o singoli interessati. Indymedia Roma ritiene che sia giusto ed indispensabile sensibilizzare i suoi utenti sull'importanza della tutela della privacy.

- Invitiamo chi pubblica materiale fotografico o video a farlo con estrema cautela e nel rispetto pi\xF9 profondo di chi vi \xE8 ritratto in modo riconoscibile. Il modo pi\xF9 sicuro per tutti di pubblicare questo tipo di materiale \xE8 editare sempre e comunque i volti ed i segni distintivi riconoscibili delle persone ritratte prima di pubblicare (link con un howto). Internet vive in tempo reale e indymedia Roma non \xE8 un'eccezione. Quando pubblichi qualcosa \xE8 assai probabile che venga immediatamente letta da polizia, digos, giornalisti di ogni specie o dalla zia pina a cui sarebbe stato meglio non fare sapere certe cose. E questo avviene in tempo reale, quando clicchi su pubblica loro potenzialmente lo stanno gi\xE0 leggendo cos\xEC come lo stanno gi\xE0 leggendo migliaia di persone e altrettanto potenzialmente lo stanno copiando e diffondendo ulteriormente sul web (cosa possibile anche in modo totalmente automatico e senza intervento umano) impedendo di fatto ogni forma di modifica o cancellazione definitiva delle copie del post sparse per la rete. Quindi pensaci prima di pubblicare qualunque cosa, pensa a proteggere te stesso e gli altri e valuta attentamente se vale la pena rischiare. Indymedia Roma ha deciso di non porre nessun sistema di censura preventiva del materiale fotografico, ti chiediamo quindi di autoregolarti nel momento in cui pubblichi. Per questo abbiamo previsto un sistema automatico che ogni qual volta pubblichi materiale fotografico, ricorda di concentrarsi sulla potenziale pericolosit\xE0 dello stesso.

-Indymedia Roma pensa che sia giusto ed indispensabile sensibilizzare i suoi utenti sull'importanza della tutela della privacy, che \xE8 per noi fondamentale. Privacy \xE8 il diritto all'anonimato, il diritto alla tutela dei dati sensibili (fotografie, nomi, inidrizzi, numeri di telefono) nostri, di chi legge, di chi pubblica, di chi naviga, di chiunque. Per questo motivo:

I contenuti presenti nella colonna centrale (in gergo detti feature o FTR) di Indymedia Roma sono notizie e approfondimenti che il gruppo reputa necessitino di maggiore spazio e attenzione. Per proporre dei testi bastera' scriverli nell'apposita mailing list e aspettare un minimo di 24h, se dopo le 24h, necessarie affinche' tutt* possano avere il tempo di leggere l'articolo, non sono sorte motivazioni forti o contrasti sul contenuto della ftr questa puo' "salire" ossia essere pubblicata. Vale il metodo del silenzio assenso, se non si hanno obiezioni non e' necessario scrivere "sono d'accordo" , onde evitare inutili valanghe di mail. I testi delle feature non devono essere dei volantini politici di una certa area, devono portare informazioni, devono spiegare brevemente il succo dell'argomento, devono rispondere alle domande: Chi? Cosa? Perche'? Dove? Quando? e devono dare maggiori informazioni su diversi punti di vista tramite dei link diretti.

The comunity which is asking che consensus with this form has born from the previously group who handled the pages of the local category "Roma" on the italy.indymedia.org site. After the national network decision to delocalizate into local sites, with the aim to have much more active presence in the territory, we have create a mailing list to coordinate where, in this moment, a group of people think that can spread the indymedia philosophy around. By including more people and groups inside which need a self made media we would like to cover more and more places close to Rome and the whole region.

• Issue focus?

All the issues that people inside the indymedia community wants to talk about, especially the issues in which we are directly involved: antifascism, cyber rights, human rights (asylium people, right for housing), precarity movement, students & university. The struggle against privatization of services and spaces. We are focused on event that happens in Rome, such as big demonstrations and summit (especiallly FAO meeting). We want people to understand the using of indymedia and give a chance to everybody who's doing something alternative to use the instrument in the way to communicate about an issue, not in a propagandistic way though.

As above, many times Rome is the location of Big national demonstration. Many times we have organized media center open to everyone in different sites of the city, inside social center and collaborating with the antagonist local, 30 years old, radio station.

Our request of partecipation to the Indymedia network has born from the need to have a media instrument for the people. The decision of the italian network to split up and reorganize us locally to favorite an active partecipation of the people, with the goal of cover in terms of information, as much as possible of a city so big as Rome, information that doesn't find any place on mainstream media.

• What kind of resources can you contribute, in terms of server/bandwidth/technical and organizing skills?

We already have an own server which will be shared with other local italian indymedia, we can administer it but right now we don't have energies to help the whole network.

• What kind of outreach have you done to bring together a diverse group of people?

In the past, a group of people which were inside the local group have organized different workshop about the idea of indymedia, both teorical and technical, and about the indymedia instrument. At this moment we are coordinating ourselves through the mailing list to organize a public meeting, in which we want everybody to praticipate, where we would like to talk about the indymedia that is growing, the software, the idea behind, the past bad thinkg happened and so on.

• How does the makeup of your collective reflect the diversity of the local community (e.g. in realtion to gender-, sexual-, spiritual-, and/or cultural-identity)?

We come from differents political background and differents gender, we are really concerned about the differences of gender and cultural.

• If your group currently does not represent the diversity of the local community, particularly in relation to groups who are underrepresented in mainstream society and denied access to vehicles of expression, what steps will be taken to address this on an ongoing basis?

Though our group is extremely heterogenous, we are aware that we don't represent the complex metropolitan reality of Rome and its surrondings, a reality where the people and communities who are unrepresented and have no access to vehicles of expression are many, and have different backgrounds and life experiences. As a community, we will do our best to give visibility to any contribution that is coherent with our policy. Our objective is to make it possible for the groups or individuals that are usually denied access to vehicles of expression to use indymedia and become part of the indy community, so as to gradually move away from a situation that we experienced in the past, where a relatively small group of people would be responsible for the contents published in the site without a real contribution from the actors of the events that were narrated.

• What steps will be taken to involve individuals in workfields new to them? What measures will be taken to overcome a gendered work division?

We intend to organise a number of meetings with the various communities active at a local level in rome, where we will present the project and discuss the new phase of the indymedia project in rome. As a follow up, and according to the level of interest and active participation of groups and individuals, we will hold a series of workshops aimed at sharing the technical knowledge and promoting awareness as regards to the potentials of the new tool. We are also planning to promote the new web site through gadgets and print outs, as was done in the past. For what regards this first phase, we believe it is important to organise a number of internal workshops for the activists that have subscribed to the new list (though the workshops will be open also to whoever might be interested). These first set of workshops will be aimed at reaching a common understanding of the new software and exploring the basic technical aspects related to the web site structure as well as to the server that will host it.

Who We Are (Mission Statement)

Indymedia Roma is a network of individuals and a network of media-activists; it offers an information covering from the grounds-up, non-corporative and non-commercial of social and political news that usually do not get covering on the mainstream media.

Indymedia Roma believes in a radical transformation of the society based on the partecipation and on the spreading of views alternative to the ones officially and unilaterally determined and spread, with the intent of contributing to the elaboration of positive models for a society more just, equal and sustainable.

The Indymedia Roma node takes part to the Indymedia Network: born for the need of media covering for an event that media would have probably deformed, the Seattle protests against WTO; Indymedia made possible, also thanks to the Internet, the rising of grassroots media, self-organized, non-profit and independent from institutional and commercial media. Indymedia Roma is part of this network.

Indymedia's mediatic strength is due by a web platform both adaptable and user-friendly, to a fully-automatic database, to powerful servers for audio and video streaming and a continuous flow of always-fresh news. Anybody can load and edit audio and video recordings, articles, news, communicates.

Activists do not intend to delegate to corporate media that belongs to the great powers of politics and economics, the task of communications, fundamental resource in the struggle for a more just and free society. So Indymedia has in open publication and free partecipation (free as in freedom) his base principle, being, at the same time its main strength. The task ? To give voice to realities and struggles that do not gain any covering in the mainstream media, giving them a place of visibility and direct, un-mediated confrontation.

The former experience, that took place in Roma an Indymedia Italy node formed in 2001, tried to tell from the ground up and with no discrimination of area or political party, what ip happened in our city or region, from the struggles for the right to get a home, to anti-fascist struggles, to metropolitan conflicts, toghether with other media-activism experiences such as community radio stations and hacklabs, taking example for action from the motto "Become your Media".

To take part to Indymedia Roma, you need to subscribe to the mailing list and take active part to public and open meetings, periodically publicized throught the web site.

Assemblies are the main place in which decisions are taken throught a the consensus method, a method tha permits to perform a syntesis between the different positions in a strictly non-coercitive and cooperative way, in the respect of ideological and genre variety, with the task of expanding and developing relations in a non-hierarchical, autonomous and solidal way.

Assemblies give also the opportunity to share Indymedia's method and philosophy, and represent the main tool to broaden the partecipation to the project.

Admin take part in the technical administration of the site, soliciting active partecipation of anybody: admin are but that helper for the site who, throught their activity, permit that it could be more and more usable by any woman and any man. The elaboration of content made on the Indymedia Roma coordination list is fully open to anybody who likes and can contribute.

Indymedia Roma is studying new ways to thicken the gap between administrators and simple users, for both the administration and the uptaking of the project.

The request to become admin must be done to the coordination list of the local node, and needs what follows:

1. feeling confortable with open publishing and the site's way of working.
2. taking part to Indimedia Roma open assemblies and being subscribed to coordination list
3. agreeing with the policy and the coordination rule that Indymedia Roma gave itself, knowing they could be re-discussed at any time
4. following a technical workshop on the website paraphernalia
5. having trust by at least one or few known people in the network

Membership Criteria

a. Sharing the same view as the NIMC Manifesto and Unitary Principles.

Indymedia Roma pledges to spread and to sustain the NIMC both in the method and by principles. It shares fully and deeply the same view. Indymedia Roma believes that spread and etherogeneous participation, both on the NIMC net and on local basis, represents one of the medium and of methods to take awareness about the transformation of the society.

Indymedia Roma pledges to be an open and participated entity, in a non-hierarchical, independent, self-organized and solidar way. Through the participation and the plural voices by which Indymedia Roma is made up, it will try to tell about forgotten truths and about mistified ones by mainstream media.

With the use of open publishing as an instrument to disseminate informations, we want to offer a privileged but non-exclusive place for the expression of local communities.

We intend Consensus Method as a basilar medium to decision-making inside the community, even if its punctual application is still a great bet, maybe only in Italy.

Indymedia Roma does not claim to tell the facts in an objective manner, but consider the objectivity more than the sum of the subjective narration by participants.

b. Being involved in a participation as relevant as to manage a working IMC

Indymedia Roma is made up by activists of different nature, some already present and active in the previous Indymedia Italia plus some more other. The main discussion place is themailing-list which counts 94 people sibscribed.

Rome is a city full of events that need a better visibility, so we teach people and collectives active in various environments to build news, the informations and activities they carry on by themselves. Indymedia Roma is not intended as the press agency of the roman antagonism. Among participants to the list there is people who own far different skills, which are ready to be shared with others not to monopolize any aspect of the administration of a working IMC.

c. Making meetings open to the public (no group is admitted to own the exclusive "property" of a IMC )

Since the beginning inside Indymedia Italy, Indymedia Roma played discussion meeting for discussion and informative workshops on how to manage the IMC and how to take part.

All of these meetings took part in public places as social centers published either on the site or on the mailing list.

We feel in this moment of rebirth that these meeting should be empowered and spread wider on the territory so to strengthen the fundamental, positive contact and participation of local communities.

*f. Accepting to use the Open Publishing by the means understated in the NIMC's Editorial Policy *

As by the 'a' point, we consider the open publishing as the basic instrument in making information in the most open, horizontal and participative way. We believe that the true strength of the IMC is in its ability to provide a plymorphic reading beside a sense attribution to facts of the real complexity, permitted by the open publishing's mechanism by the participating community.

g. Adopting a decisional policy aligned with consensus' principle, among transparent process based upon equality

Decisional practices used and prediliged by Indymedia Roma have their basis on collective discussion upon which evrybody can express himself. The adopted policy has been defined after an analysis process that evolves from the consensus, either on assemblies or by the publication of themes discussed on the mailing-lists and in a wiki page where the formulation and documents' edition will be possible for anyone.

h. Having one or more speaker who volontarily take part in the decisional global process and to meetings in the quality of representer/liaison in their turn, who are fully aware of their own role

The choice to split Indymedia Italia into decentralized nodes follows the idea that the participation to the global network should pass throught more people than before. All nodes are so compelled to interface with international lists to require their participation. Indymedia Roma will do the same and will participate throught always different people to tthe development of the global network. When global meeting will occur, the one that will speak for Indymedia Roma will be the spokesman of positions on which there is condivision about the aforementioned node. By the moment, ameba00x is our only spokesman, who has subscribed both on the new-imc and imc-process lists.

i. Taking part to main Communication methods of the IMC Network which are in the interest and for the health of the Network. They should also contribute to the IMC's work. Assuring than at least one person of your local IMC takes part at any time to the IMC Communication list [ http://lists.indymedia.org/mailman/listinfo/imc-communication]

By now, nobody among us is subscribed to imc-communication. We're looking for a person different from ameba00x to subscribe and to make as a 'liason' between the two lists.

* j. Not being affiliate to any official affiliation or to any party, State or political candidate, even admitting to people taking part to the aforementioned organizations to participate to this node's activities.*

The participants' community of Indymedia Roma is run in an autonomous way from any political, institutional or statal organization.

k.IMC will not take part by no means to commercial or for-profit initiatives.

Every initiative in which Indymedia Roma is taking part, will be absolutely no-profit. IMCN is involved in the de-commercialization of the information, so will dissociate from any local IMC that decide to become a for-profit media corporation. The only fund-raising campaigns made by Indymedia Roma will be about the hosting expenses and for any initiative that Indymedia Roma may provide on the territory.

Policy(en)

Even remaining as a least common denominator inside the whole indymedia network, the policy [ http://docs.indymedia.org/view/Global/DocumentsTranslation ]and her regulation will remain s passible for discussion and variations, if the group feels this as a need. The work group can be made wider for co-optation.

Posts that do not respect the following policy are not deleted, but hidden. So they remain visible and available in a page different from the home [http://indy-rm.ortiche.net/hidden].

Indymedia Roma makes not censorship of anything.

Indymedia Roma is an open publishing place. Since the newswire is the focus point of the project and the real value of Indymedia Project, we adopt this policy to keep it as usable as possible and clean from junk that comes in any system open to anybody.

With the editorial policy we intend a set of rules to manage messages (posts) considered in policy from the ones "out of policy".

So, the criteria that we will use to "hide", "modify", "delete" posts already available on the newswire.

A criterion to consider "out of policy" is when we have:

fascist posts - sexist posts - posts of political propaganda, eitheter partitic or institutional - post with religious propaganda - post without informational content - spam and merchandising

These message categories will be hidden, not deleted.

Therefore:

-Messages that contains personal data (name, surname, address, telephone number, etc.) are edited to hide with xxx only these data: the choice to support anonimate and privacy is a fundamental and political one.

-Duplicated messages or void ones are deleted.

-If people who made a post asks for it, messages can be hidden or edited.

-Messages clearly aimed at simple insult, or infamy threat staff are hidden.

-Messages void of any content are hidden. For any content we mean, for example, expression of moods or opinions that, as sharable, do not contain any further information.

-Indymedia Roma does not hide messages on the basis of their truth, we invite any user to explain news so that the reader can understand as much as possible about the deeds.

-In this new version of Indymedia Roma there exists the possibility for the reader to notify the managing list about posts considered out of policy.

It is as easy as clicking on "Notifica il post" (notify the post), positioned right under the post to add a comment providing the reason why it has to be considered out of policy.

This way we hope to sensibilize mainly the readers to manage together with us the web site and to consider it an instrument in the hand of the persons who want to use it.

-About the publication of photo or material considered dangerous for justice we will be very careful, deleting posts that could damage anyone. We will put them online only when, on the basis of a discussion on the list, we consider them non-dangerous, also by requests coming from the various groups or single individualities interested on them.

When you publish something, it is very probable that it will be read by police, digos, journalist of any kind or by the uncle Pina to whom it could have been better not to let her know certain things. Feature

The contents in the central column (gergon called feature or FTR) of Indymedia Roma are news which needs more space and visibility, as stated from the point of view of the group. To promote a feature you just need to post the text on the mailing list and wait at least 24 hours, if after 24 hours, which is the minimum time for let everybody read it, nobody has nothing to say against the feature, this one can be published on the front page. We use the silence consensus, if nobody answer the feature is automatically promoted, we use this method to avoid mail with just the sentence "I agree".

The content of a feature must not be a political pamplet of a certain political idea, it must contain information about the subject, it must explain briefly what is about, it must answer the classical 5 W: who? why? what? where? when? We use direct link to give the reader the chance to read about different points of view.
