IMC Editorial tute

Indymedia Tute

In this little tute I'll just demonstrate how to edit the 'Calendar' and 'Oxford Links' sections, and how to write features for the middle column. The easiest way for me to show this is by concrete examples. Please don't actually work through these, though, because they are examples of things that have already been done. Instead wait till something new needs doing.

Example

We want to add a link to New Internationalist. The address is http://www.newint.org.

How To Do It

  1. Go to the admin page. You should probably bookmark it, so you don't have to search around for the address.
  2. Log in using your admin username and password. If you don't have one, email me and I'll try and sort you out one.
  3. Scroll down the page to the section called 'EXTRA'. Click on 'edit include files'.
  4. Click the 'edit' link opposite 'oxford'.
  5. Click the 'edit' link opposite 'links.inc'. (If we were editing the calendar, we'd go for the 'events.inc' one).
  6. We see the following:
    <p> <strong>Alternative Media</strong><br> <a href="http://www.undercurrents.org/">Undercurrents</a><br> <strong>Anti-War Groups</strong><br> <a href="http://geocities.com/eastoxfordstopthewar/">East Oxford Stop the War</a><br> <a href="http://groups.msn.com/MuslimOxfordStoptheWar/">Muslim Oxford Stop the War</a><br> <a href="http://osstw.lautre.net/">Oxford Students Stop the War</a><br> <a href="http://rsaw.lautre.net/">Rhodes Scholars Against the War</a><br> <strong>Research Groups</strong><br> <a href="http://www.corporatewatch.org/">Corporate Watch</a><br> <strong>Social Justice</strong><br> <a href="http://www.geocities.com/fuspey/">FUSPEY</a><br> <a href="http://lists.riseup.net/www/info/oxford-social-forum/">Oxford Social Forum</a> </p>
  7. Insert the line:
    <a href="http://www.newint.org/">New Internationalist</a><br>
just under the undercurrents link, so that it goes in the Alternative Media section.
  8. It should now read:
    <p> <strong>Alternative Media</strong><br> <a href="http://www.undercurrents.org/">Undercurrents</a><br> <a href="http://www.newint.org/">New Internationalist</a><br> <strong>Anti-War Groups</strong><br> <a href="http://geocities.com/eastoxfordstopthewar/">East Oxford Stop the War</a><br> <a href="http://groups.msn.com/MuslimOxfordStoptheWar/">Muslim Oxford Stop the War</a><br> <a href="http://osstw.lautre.net/">Oxford Students Stop the War</a><br> <a href="http://rsaw.lautre.net/">Rhodes Scholars Against the War</a><br> <strong>Research Groups</strong><br> <a href="http://www.corporatewatch.org/">Corporate Watch</a><br> <strong>Social Justice</strong><br> <a href="http://www.geocities.com/fuspey/">FUSPEY</a><br> <a href="http://lists.riseup.net/www/info/oxford-social-forum/">Oxford Social Forum</a> </p>
  9. Click the 'Save' button. The page should reload.
  10. Check the preview at the bottom of the page to see if all is well
  11. Click 'Start' at the top of the page
  12. In the 'GENERATE MANUALLY' section, click 'generate all new'
  13. Click 'logout' at the top of the page
  14. The change should appear in about 5 minutes.

Changing the Calendar

The calendar is hosted on ox4.org.

Visitors can add their events at http://ox4.org/~oimc/cal/announce.php.

If events need to be edited or deleted, log in to the calendar at http://ox4.org/~oimc/cal/admin/. You will need the user name and password. If you do not have these, send a message to the editorial list ( imc-oxford-features at lists.indymedia.org ) and ask for the event to be changed.

Writing Features

Examples

Somebody asks for the following to be posted as a regional feature on OxIMC:
*************
DON"T HATE THE NEWS, MAKE THE NEWS!

OXFORD INDYMEDIA LAUNCH
Monday 21st July - 7pm - East Oxford Community
Centre, Princes Street

Find out how you can get involved in Oxford's own
Indymedia. Discover what 'open publishing' really
means, and how the website works in practice. Watch
exciting alternative video made here in Oxford, and
learn how to become part of a global network. Find
out how to bypass the conservative corporate media and
learn how to exchange news and information freely and
directly.

Come to the launch and tell your friends!

***********

PLUS the "OXFORD INDYMEDIA" image from lower down the
features column.
It's been out on the features list for more than 24 hours without any objections, so you decide to post it up.

How To Do It

  1. Go to the admin page.
  2. Log in using your admin username and password.
  3. In the 'ADD/EDIT' section, click on 'new article'.
  4. For 'article type', select 'Regional Feature'.
  5. Under 'topic', tick the 'Oxford' box.
  6. Under 'long title', put 'Don't hate the news, make the news!'
  7. Under 'author', put whatever takes your fancy wink
  8. Tick the HTML box (unless there are no links or pictures, which there are in this case).
  9. Now you need to add a few HTML tags to this text:
OXFORD INDYMEDIA LAUNCH Monday 21st July - 7pm - East Oxford Community Centre, Princes Street Find out how you can get involved in Oxford's own Indymedia. Discover what 'open publishing' really means, and how the website works in practice. Watch exciting alternative video made here in Oxford, and learn how to become part of a global network. Find out how to bypass the conservative corporate media and learn how to exchange news and information freely and directly. Come to the launch and tell your friends!
(have a look thru the HTML tutorial if you want).
  10. First you add the <br> tags, so that it reads:
OXFORD INDYMEDIA LAUNCH<br> Monday 21st July - 7pm - East Oxford Community<br> Centre, Princes Street<br> <br> Find out how you can get involved in Oxford's own Indymedia. Discover what 'open publishing' really means, and how the website works in practice. Watch exciting alternative video made here in Oxford, and learn how to become part of a global network. Find out how to bypass the conservative corporate media and learn how to exchange news and information freely and directly.<br> <br> Come to the launch and tell your friends!<br> <br>
  11. Let's make the first bit bold, to draw attention to the basic details:
<strong>OXFORD INDYMEDIA LAUNCH<br> Monday 21st July - 7pm - East Oxford Community<br> Centre, Princes Street</strong><br> <br> Find out how you can get involved in Oxford's own Indymedia.

  12. Now we want to add some links. We'll make 'open publishing' point to an indymedia page explaining a bit about open publishing, 'the website' point to the OxIMC frontpage, 'alternative video' point to the undercurrents site and 'global network' point to the global indymedia site. Now it would read:
<strong>OXFORD INDYMEDIA LAUNCH<br> Monday 21st July - 7pm - East Oxford Community<br> Centre, Princes Street</strong><br> <br> Find out how you can get involved in Oxford's own Indymedia. Discover what <a href="http://www.indymedia.org/fish.php3?file=www.indymedia.newswire"> 'open publishing'</a> really means, and how <a href="/en/regions/oxford">the website</a> works in practice. Watch exciting <a href="http://www.undercurrents.org/"> alternative video</a> made here in Oxford, and learn how to become part of a <a href="http://www.indymedia.org">global network</a>. Find out how to bypass the conservative corporate media and learn how to exchange news and information freely and directly.<br> <br> Come to the launch and tell your friends!<br> <br>
  13. OK smile We're finished with the HTML now, so we paste this into the 'abstract'.
  14. We can leave 'content' and 'internal comment' empty.
  15. Click the 'insert' button.
  16. If we wanted to use a new picture instead of one already on the site, we'd follow the instructions in this tute this tute instead of steps 17 to 20.
  17. Go to the bottom of the page and click '[+]add image' (under 'Attachments')
  18. Now we need to search for an image that's already on the site, so type 'oxford indymedia' in the search box and click the filter button.
  19. You should be able to find the right picture. Click 'attach' opposite it.
  20. It should now be there at the bottom of the page in the 'Attachments' section.
  21. Now tick the 'published' box, and click the 'save' button.
  22. Click 'Start' at the top of the page
  23. In the 'GENERATE MANUALLY' section, click 'generate all new'
  24. Click 'logout' at the top of the page
  25. The change should appear in about 5 minutes.
