Version 0.2
This version was sent to the list on
27th Feb 2005 and it was agreed at the Sheffield Indymedia meeting held on
23rd May 2005:
Sheffield Indymedia is for the creation of radical,
accurate and passionate telling of truth. It aspires
to erode the divisions between the reporter and the
reported, enabling people in our communities to speak
for themselves: sharing their stories, the issues that
affect their lives and their action for change; so
that we can see the world through our own lens and
communicate with our own voices, rather than accept a
distorted perspective communicated through the
corporate media.
Within this context Sheffield Indymedia aims to
provide an alternative to the local and global
corporate media, and to bring a grassroots, Do It
Yourself perspective to the communicating of news and
stories through which people, oppressed and
dispossessed by the capitalist system, can find a
voice. It exists to support people striving for social
change within our communities and without by providing
information and coverage that illuminates rather than
diminishes the actions taken by local people. It
provides a means through which links can be made from
the local to national and global issues; and for
global issues to be distilled into local perspectives.
A means which also enables communication between
local groups striving for change, and through which
groups with common goals can make links.
Sheffield and its surrounding communities have a long
radical history. Sheffield indymedia aims to maintain
this radical history, but also to enhance its radical
future. Within a wider perspective it aims to support
and document the struggles of the global
anti-capitalist movement. It is imperative that the
narratives of our present and history are written by
the many and not the few.
