Server(s) Donations
This page deals with the money being raised and spent for new Indymedia Mir publishing servers for IMC-UK and other Indymedias. The need to fundraise became imminent when the hard drives of the London server we were hosted on were seized by the FBI so we started a
New Server(s) Appeal in Oct 2004 that very quickly raised a substantial sum. We decided to buy a relatively cheap server and joined the
Seattle Community Colocation Project (SCCP) in February 2005. Related twikis are
UkHostingComparisons for considerations about where to host it and
UkServerProcess about how it will be run. Proposals for the technical specifications are at
UkRiseupServer and
UkHardwareComparisons.
Since the summer of 2006 there was a vivid debate on the uk-tech and uk-process lists, here four links but check the archives:

At the network meeting in November 2006 it was
decided to spend half of the raised money for a new server, the related twiki is

Half of this sum, ie 2820.70 can be used to pay the hardware of the new database server(s). Note that hosting for the new server will need
new fundraising for running costs!!!
Running costs at SCCP
Since February 2005
Traven is hosted by the
Seattle Community Colocation Project (SCCP). To cover their running costs, IMC-UK has pledged 70 USD monthly from February 2005 to March 2006; from April 2006 to September we used
Egret as experimental database server and pledged
120 USD monthly. Since October 2006 this server is no longer in use and we have fallen back on the pledged 70 USD monthly.
Four of the people in the UK donating a tenner-a-month have said that their tenner should be counted as running cost contribution rather than payments towards the costs for a new server. After deducting 30p for bank costs from each contribution we therefore can count with 38.80 GBP = 76.13 USD monthly (on 23 Dec 2006) for running costs - this covers the 70 USD pledged to SCCP.
