Abstract

We'd like to receive x-y funds for the purchase, placement and hosting costs of a server for latin american indymedia sites. This document describes the project and supplies background information.

Who we are

The Independent Media Center - Indymedia*(1)* - is a network of collectively run media outlets for the creation of radical, accurate, and passionate tellings of the truth. We work out of a love and inspiration for people who continue to work for a better world, despite corporate media's distortions and unwillingness to cover the efforts to free humanity.

Since 2000 around 17 IMCs had been created in Latin America, many of them works as a network for local collectives in their country like the Indymedia Brazil Network*(2)*, which is constituted of 15 local collectives spread all around Brazil, from Amazons to Porto Alegre, sharing the same website where they publish stories.

The project

For many years the Indymedia resources has been centralized on first world countries. Create a server for the Latin America Indymedias is a big step for the whole network, because is not only a descentralization of resourses on the network but also a way to provide a bigger technological empowerment to those collectives. The administration of the server will be done by the Latin America collectives and the goal is to throught this create a skill sharing process so the people from those collectives can learn more about the technology indymedia and be able to control it themselves.

To center the administration of Latin American sites in the same server facilitates the processes, of communication for the easiness in to communicate in spanish, besides approaching similar local realities and the possibility of a physical contact which had the proximity of this countries to be more realistic of than the contact with the others collectives in the world.

We expecte the server on the short term to be used by indymedias from brasil, ecuador, bolivia, qollasuyu (indigenous peoples) and venezuela. On the longer term, other latin american IMCS might be hosted on this server. Expected to serve the needs for the coming 3 years.

Hosting location

During November of last year, the main two hosting providers used by indymedia have announced they will terminate their sponsoring activities. As a result of this, around 50 IMCs will need to find another hosting solution. This includes about all Latin American IMCs. Because of the seriousness of this situation, indymedia activists primarily from San Francisco have worked to organize a community colocation project to be able to host indymedias (but also other non-profit, non-commercial community colo project). Due to various considerations, both legally and technically, a hosting provider in the United States seems to be the best solution. Therefore, we would like very much to host our server in San Francisco, but, as this colo needs to pay for its services, we need funds to cover these costs.

The budget

Based on similar purchases within the indymedia network, we aim for a server budget of $3000. Placement and miscellaneous startup costs are estimated at $500. Recurring colocation costs are expected to lie around $100, taking into account the expected bandwidth usage.

This would amount to $3500 startup costs and recurring costs of $100 per month.
