SERVER CRISIS NEEDS IMMEDIATE DONATIONS

Homepage link:

01 Nov 2003: Indymedia has just been notified that it will be losing its free hosting for the main IMC server, which hosts the majority of local indymedia.org sites. The IMC-Tech working group needs your immediate donations in order to purchase new servers and locate new hosting spaces by the 01 Dec 2003 deadline. Donations of hardware or hosting are also very welcome! Please email imc-tech@lists.indymedia.org.

Details page:

The hosting for the main Indymedia web server (stallman) has been donated pro-bono for over 2 years. However, the hosting provider has informed us that they can no longer offer this substantial donation, and we have until 01 Dec 2003 to find a solution.

We are asking anyone who can to make a donation of $5. With a positive response from the large numbers of Indymedia contributors and sympathizers, we hope to raise the funds necessary. If you have more resources, we encourage you to donate whatever you can: $25, $50, $100, $500.

Background:

The IMC-Tech working group has been working to try and decentralize the number of indymedia.org sites on one server for years, but coordinating the various local IMC's and the necessary tech folks has proven difficult. Techs and other IMC folks are working hard to both secure new hosting arrangements, and help spread out the location of various sites so that this crisis can be prevented in the future. In addition, this will lower the amount of bandwidth and other resources required for any one server. Your donations are need for the following:

Server hardware:
  • Pre-built rackmount or tower servers
  • Server components for custom-built servers
  • PC Weasel's (please email imc-tech@lists.indymedia.org for info first)
  • Additional hard drives (expensive server-class SCSI drives)
  • RAM memory (expensive server-class ECC/Registered memory)

Server hosting:
  • Funds for lump sum donations or other costs associated hosting
